Floods – Flash Floods Damage Homes and Crops in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur
Floods –Heavy rainfall triggered flash floods in parts of Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district early on Friday, causing damage to homes, affecting farmland, and prompting authorities to move vulnerable families to safer locations. Officials said rescue and relief teams responded quickly, and no loss of life had been reported at the time of the latest update. The district administration has also started evaluating the extent of damage caused by floodwaters and landslides.
Families Shifted to Safer Shelter
According to officials, the worst-affected area was Barkuanda in Udhampur district, where sudden floodwaters entered residential localities after continuous rainfall. As a precaution, three families whose homes were impacted were relocated to the Government Middle School in Barkuanda. Local authorities said the evacuation was carried out to ensure the safety of residents while weather conditions remain uncertain.
Officials confirmed that although several houses suffered damage, there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities. Teams from the district administration are conducting field inspections to determine the losses and identify families requiring immediate assistance.
Floodwaters Also Affect Basantgarh Village
In another rain-related incident, Kadwah village in Basantgarh tehsil experienced flash flooding after water levels rose rapidly. The overflowing water damaged a number of houses and affected standing maize crops, creating additional concerns for local farmers who have already faced several days of persistent rainfall.
Authorities acted to reduce the impact by redirecting floodwater through an alternative channel. Officials said this measure helped prevent the water from spreading further into residential neighbourhoods and nearby agricultural fields, limiting additional destruction.
River Levels Continue to Be Closely Monitored
The administration is also keeping a close watch on river conditions across the region. Officials reported that the Tawi River in Udhampur remained below the official alert threshold. The latest measurement placed the river at 12.655 feet, comfortably below the alert level of 15 feet, providing some relief despite the ongoing wet weather.
However, the situation remained more concerning along the Chenab River. Authorities said the water level at Akhnoor once again crossed the flood alert mark, prompting continuous monitoring and preparedness measures in downstream areas. Disaster management teams remain on alert in case water levels rise further.
Days of Heavy Rain Leave Widespread Impact
The latest incidents come after nearly five days of sustained heavy rainfall across several parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Continuous downpours have led to flash floods, landslides, and damage to infrastructure, homes, and agricultural land in multiple districts.
Officials are urging residents living in vulnerable areas to remain cautious, follow advisories issued by local authorities, and avoid crossing flooded roads or streams. Emergency teams continue to monitor weather developments and river levels while coordinating relief measures wherever necessary.
As assessments continue, the administration is expected to provide a clearer picture of the overall damage in the coming days. Authorities have assured that all necessary support will be extended to affected families, with priority being given to public safety, temporary shelter, and restoration efforts in areas impacted by the severe weather.
