Diplomacy – India and Cyprus Expand Strategic Cooperation Through High-Level Talks

  Diplomacy –  Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides held wide-ranging discussions in New Delhi on Friday, focusing on expanding cooperation across several strategic sectors and reinforcing ties between the two nations.

Leaders Discuss Broader Bilateral Engagement

The meeting took place at Hyderabad House, where both leaders reviewed ongoing partnerships and explored fresh opportunities for collaboration. Discussions covered key areas such as trade, investment, defence, security, technology, education, artificial intelligence, research, innovation, mobility, culture and financial technology.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both sides also exchanged views on major regional and global developments. The leaders discussed the importance of coordination at multilateral platforms and emphasized stronger engagement between India and the European Union through Cyprus.

Before the formal talks began, Prime Minister Modi welcomed President Christodoulides with a warm greeting. The two leaders were also seen sharing a light moment while taking a selfie together ahead of the official meeting.

Tribute Paid at Rajghat

Earlier in the day, President Christodoulides visited Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi. The visit highlighted the symbolic and diplomatic importance of his trip to India, which aims to deepen long-term cooperation between the two countries.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also met the visiting Cypriot leader and praised his positive approach towards strengthening bilateral engagement. Jaishankar noted that discussions included ways to enhance India-Cyprus relations as well as broader India-European Union cooperation.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Jaishankar said he appreciated the Cypriot President’s commitment to advancing ties and expressed optimism over the future direction of the partnership.

Visit Builds on Growing Momentum

President Christodoulides arrived in New Delhi on Thursday after completing the Mumbai leg of his official India visit. He was received at the airport by Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta and was accorded a ceremonial welcome along with a Guard of Honour.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the visit reflects the growing momentum in bilateral relations following Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Cyprus in June 2025. Officials from both countries view the ongoing diplomatic exchanges as a step toward expanding cooperation in economic and strategic sectors.

The Cypriot President is also scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu during his stay in the capital. President Murmu will host an official banquet in honour of the visiting dignitary.

Mumbai Visit Focused on Economic Cooperation

Before reaching New Delhi, President Christodoulides visited Mumbai, where economic and business engagement formed a major part of the agenda. During the visit, he participated in a ceremonial bell-ringing event at the National Stock Exchange alongside NSE Chairman Srinivas Injeti and Managing Director and CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan.

The delegation also toured the exchange premises and held discussions with senior officials regarding financial cooperation and investment opportunities between India and Cyprus.

NSE India later stated that the interaction focused on strengthening institutional ties and identifying new areas for collaboration in the financial sector.

The ongoing visit is being seen as an important diplomatic effort aimed at enhancing strategic coordination, boosting economic partnerships and expanding cooperation between India, Cyprus and the wider European region
