Dialogue – Political Leaders Urged to Build Common Platform for Jammu and Kashmir Talks

Dialogue – Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has appealed to political parties across the Union Territory to come together and initiate a coordinated effort aimed at reopening meaningful discussions with the Central Government. Drawing attention to the recent progress achieved in Ladakh through engagement with New Delhi, she said Jammu and Kashmir should also pursue a united approach to address public concerns and aspirations.

Letters Sent to Leaders Across Political Spectrum

As part of her initiative, Mehbooba wrote to several prominent political and community leaders, including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, Jammu and Kashmir Congress president Tariq Hameed Karra, CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, People’s Conference chairman Sajad Gani Lone, Member of Parliament Engineer Rashid, AAP leader Mehraj Malik, PDF chairman Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen, National Panthers Party president Harsh Dev Singh, Shiv Sena leader Manish Sahni, Kashmiri Pandit Sangharsh Samiti president Sanjay Tickoo, and Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee chairman Jaspal Singh.

In her communication, she stressed the importance of collective political engagement, arguing that the region’s future should not be shaped by division or uncertainty. According to her, leaders from different ideological backgrounds should work together to present the concerns of the people before the national leadership.

Call for Consensus Beyond Party Lines

Mehbooba stated that Jammu and Kashmir currently faces a challenging political situation that requires cooperation rather than confrontation. She emphasized that restoring confidence among citizens and addressing long-standing issues would require constructive engagement with the Government of India.

She argued that broad-based consensus among political stakeholders is necessary to move beyond the present impasse. A united representation, she said, would better reflect the aspirations and grievances of the people while strengthening efforts to secure a peaceful and stable future for the region.

Ladakh Developments Cited as an Example

Referring to the achievements of political and civil society groups in Ladakh, Mehbooba noted that sustained dialogue had helped create momentum on issues important to the people there. She said the developments involving the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance demonstrate that negotiations and discussions can lead to meaningful outcomes.

According to her, Jammu and Kashmir can benefit from a similar approach. She maintained that political disagreements among regional parties have often weakened collective efforts and that cooperation has become even more important in the years following the constitutional changes of 2019.

Request to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah

The PDP leader specifically urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to take the lead in convening an all-party meeting. She described his support as crucial for creating a common platform capable of bringing together diverse political voices.

In her message, she highlighted the need for genuine unity during what she described as an unprecedented period for the region. She expressed hope that a shared political effort could contribute to protecting the rights and dignity of the people within the framework of the Indian Constitution.

Appeal for Shared Responsibility

Separate letters addressed to Sunil Sharma and Tariq Hameed Karra carried a similar message. Mehbooba urged political leaders to move beyond partisan considerations and focus on the broader interests of the public.

She said the initiative should not become an exercise in political competition or credit-seeking. Instead, it should serve as an opportunity for leaders to demonstrate collective responsibility while working toward peace, stability, and economic progress in Jammu and Kashmir.

A New Attempt After Earlier Political Efforts

Political observers are now watching closely to see how various parties respond to the proposal. The outreach comes years after the formation of the Gupkar Alliance, which brought together several regional parties seeking the restoration of Article 370.

Although the alliance initially attracted attention, it gradually lost cohesion due to internal disagreements and eventually became inactive before the 2024 Assembly elections. Critics argued that the grouping struggled to develop a clear strategy and failed to establish sustained engagement with the central government.

Against that backdrop, Mehbooba’s latest initiative is being viewed as a renewed effort to foster cooperation among Jammu and Kashmir’s political stakeholders and explore a common path forward through dialogue and consensus
