Defence Technology – India Successfully Tests Indigenous TARA Glide Weapon System

  Defence Technology – India achieved another milestone in defence technology after the successful maiden trial of the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) weapon system, developed to improve the precision and effectiveness of conventional warheads.

India’s defence research sector recorded a major achievement after the Ministry of Defence confirmed the successful first flight trial of the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) system off the Odisha coast. The test was carried out on May 7 with the joint participation of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Indigenous Weapon System Marks Key Progress

According to the Ministry of Defence, TARA has been designed as India’s first home-grown glide weapon system capable of transforming standard unguided warheads into highly accurate precision-guided weapons. Officials stated that the system is expected to significantly strengthen the country’s tactical strike capabilities while reducing dependence on imported technologies.

The newly tested system functions as a modular range extension kit, allowing conventional weapons to travel longer distances with improved targeting accuracy. Defence experts believe this capability can help armed forces engage ground-based targets more efficiently during combat operations.

The weapon system was developed under the leadership of the Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in Hyderabad along with support from multiple DRDO laboratories. Officials said the project focused on building a cost-effective yet advanced guidance system capable of improving the lethality of existing warheads.

The Ministry added that TARA incorporates modern low-cost technologies aimed at delivering precise operational performance. The project is also seen as part of India’s broader push toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing and advanced military systems.

Focus on Accuracy and Extended Range

Defence authorities highlighted that glide weapons like TARA are designed to increase strike range while maintaining accuracy. Unlike traditional unguided munitions, these systems use guidance and aerodynamic technologies to hit designated targets more effectively.

Officials involved in the programme noted that the successful trial demonstrated the weapon’s flight performance and operational capability. Further evaluations and future trials are expected before the system moves toward wider deployment.

Rajnath Singh Congratulates Teams

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO scientists, Indian Air Force personnel and industry partners associated with the project. He described the successful trial as an important achievement for India’s indigenous defence programme and praised the collaborative efforts behind the development.

The Ministry of Defence also emphasised that indigenous projects such as TARA play a crucial role in strengthening national security while encouraging domestic innovation in military technology.

India has been steadily increasing investment in locally developed defence systems in recent years. Programmes involving missiles, drones, radar systems and precision-guided weapons have received significant support under the government’s self-reliance initiatives.
