Defence Leadership – Lt Gen Raja Subramani Named India’s Next CDS
Defence Leadership – The Central Government has announced the appointment of Lieutenant General N.S. Raja Subramani as the next Chief of Defence Staff, marking a major transition in India’s top military leadership. He will succeed General Anil Chauhan, whose tenure is scheduled to end on May 30.
Senior Military Role Assigned by Centre
With this appointment, Lt Gen Raja Subramani will become the country’s highest-ranking military officer and will also take charge as Secretary in the Department of Military Affairs under the Government of India. The appointment will come into effect from the day he officially assumes office.
The Ministry of Defence described the officer as one of the Army’s most experienced leaders, highlighting his extensive service record spanning more than four decades. Officials noted that he has handled several important operational and strategic responsibilities during his military career.
Extensive Experience Across Key Commands
Before being selected for the CDS post, Lt Gen Raja Subramani was serving as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat, a position he held from September 2025. Earlier, he had served as Vice Chief of the Army Staff and also led the Central Command as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief.
He has commanded crucial formations along India’s northern and western borders, areas considered highly sensitive from a strategic and security perspective. His experience in these sectors played a major role in shaping his military leadership profile.
Military Career Began in 1985
Lt Gen Raja Subramani began his journey in the armed forces after graduating from the National Defence Academy. He was commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985. Over the years, he steadily rose through the ranks while taking on several operational and administrative assignments.
During his early years in service, he attended the Joint Services Command and Staff College in Bracknell, United Kingdom. After returning to India, he served as Brigade Major of a mountain brigade and later completed studies at the National Defence College in New Delhi.
Academic and International Exposure
Apart from his military background, Lt Gen Raja Subramani also holds strong academic credentials. He earned a Master of Arts degree from King’s College London and completed an M.Phil in Defence Studies from Madras University.
His international experience includes serving as Defence Attaché at the Indian Embassy in Astana, Kazakhstan, where he represented India on defence and strategic matters.
Important Operational Responsibilities
Throughout his service, the officer handled several critical assignments within Army Headquarters and operational commands. As a Colonel, he worked in the Military Secretary’s branch and later managed operational responsibilities at the Eastern Command headquarters. He also served in Jammu and Kashmir as Deputy Commander of a Rashtriya Rifles sector.
Following his promotion to Brigadier, he commanded the 168 Infantry Brigade in Samba, an important military sector. He later worked in Military Intelligence and operational planning roles before taking over higher leadership positions in the Army.
Recognised for Distinguished Service
In 2023, Lt Gen Raja Subramani became the head of the Army’s Central Command. The following year, he was appointed the 47th Vice Chief of the Army Staff. After retiring from active service, he continued contributing to national security through his role at the National Security Council Secretariat.
For his contribution to the armed forces and national defence, he has received several prestigious honours, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal.
