Custodial Death –The death of a 34-year-old man while lodged in judicial custody in Tamil Nadu’s Kanniyakumari district has triggered widespread protests, with his family demanding an impartial investigation and accountability from the authorities.

A 34-year-old man identified as SabariVarman, a resident of Nagercoil, died inside prison after being arrested in connection with the alleged sale of tobacco products and later remanded to judicial custody. Officials confirmed the death on Wednesday, but the circumstances surrounding the incident have become the focus of public attention after his relatives questioned the official version and raised allegations of custodial violence.

Family Refuses to Accept Body, Demands Justice

Soon after receiving news of SabariVarman’s death, members of his family and supporters gathered in protest and blocked a major road in Kanniyakumari district. Refusing to accept the body, they insisted that an independent and transparent inquiry be conducted before the final rites.

Family members claimed they noticed several injury marks on SabariVarman’s body, alleging that these injuries suggested he had been assaulted while in custody. They accused the police of using excessive force and maintained that the incident deserved a detailed investigation to establish the truth.

Relatives said they would continue their protest until those found responsible were held accountable through legal action.

Police Begin Inquiry Into the Incident

Kanniyakumari District Superintendent of Police Dr. R. Stalin said that an official investigation has already been initiated. According to him, authorities are awaiting the findings of the post-mortem examination, which is expected to provide greater clarity regarding the cause of death.

The police stated that further information would be shared after the medical examination report becomes available, adding that the inquiry is being conducted according to legal procedures.

Political Reactions Intensify After Custodial Death

The incident has also drawn sharp political reactions. Opposition leader Udayanidhi Stalin expressed concern over the death and called for accountability from the state administration.

In a statement shared on social media, he said SabariVarman was a differently-abled individual who was reportedly healthy at the time of his arrest. Referring to the family’s allegations, he questioned the explanation that the death resulted from health-related reasons and said the visible injuries reported by relatives required a thorough investigation.

He urged the government to ensure that every aspect of the case is examined fairly and that those responsible, if found guilty, face appropriate legal consequences.

Questions Raised Over Alleged Unequal Enforcement

Udayanidhi Stalin also questioned what he described as inconsistent law enforcement in similar cases. He referred to another incident in Erode where, according to his statement, a TVK functionary arrested in connection with the alleged sale of gutkha was granted personal bail on the same day.

Drawing a comparison between the two cases, he alleged that different standards were being applied in the enforcement of the law. He argued that ordinary citizens and politically connected individuals should be treated equally under the justice system.

The opposition leader further urged the Chief Minister, who oversees the state’s police department, to respond to the allegations and ensure that the investigation proceeds without interference.

Authorities are now relying on the post-mortem findings and the ongoing investigation to establish the exact circumstances that led to SabariVarman’s death.
