Crime – AAP Leader Lucky Oberoi Shot Dead Outside Jalandhar Gurdwara
Crime – A senior local leader of the Aam Aadmi Party was killed in a targeted shooting outside a gurdwara in Jalandhar’s Model Town area on Sunday morning, sending shockwaves through the city and intensifying political debate over law and order in Punjab.

Lucky Oberoi, known within party circles for his grassroots work, was attacked shortly after arriving at the gurdwara around 8:15 am, a visit he reportedly made every morning. According to police officials, the shooting took place outside the premises, catching worshippers and nearby residents off guard.
Attack Occurs During Morning Routine
Preliminary accounts indicate that Oberoi had stepped out of his Thar SUV and was parking the vehicle when the assailants struck. Witnesses told investigators that two unidentified individuals arrived on a two-wheeler and opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene.
Sources familiar with the investigation said seven to eight rounds were fired, several of which hit Oberoi in the chest and head. The severity of the injuries left him critically wounded at the scene.
Victim Declared Dead at Hospital
Bystanders and local party workers rushed Oberoi to a nearby private hospital within minutes of the attack. Despite emergency medical efforts, doctors declared him dead on arrival. Hospital authorities later confirmed that the gunshot wounds were fatal and that there was little scope for medical intervention due to the extent of blood loss.
Police quickly cordoned off the area around the gurdwara, while forensic teams were called in to collect evidence, including bullet casings and CCTV footage from nearby establishments.
Police Launch Investigation
Senior officers, including the Superintendent of Police leading the investigation, reached the spot soon after the incident was reported. Officials stated that multiple angles are being examined, including personal enmity and political rivalry.
Investigators are also reviewing Oberoi’s recent movements and contacts. Police sources said efforts are underway to identify the attackers through surveillance footage and eyewitness statements. No arrests had been announced at the time of reporting.
Political Reactions Intensify
The killing triggered sharp reactions from opposition leaders across Punjab. Leader of Opposition in the state assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, strongly criticised the state government, alleging a breakdown of law and order under the current administration.
In a statement posted on social media, Bajwa said the murder highlighted serious governance failures, arguing that the safety of citizens was at risk if even political figures from the ruling party were not secure in public spaces.
BJP Also Questions Law and Order
The Bharatiya Janata Party also weighed in on the incident, echoing concerns about public safety. BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla described the situation in Punjab as alarming and called the shooting an example of deteriorating law enforcement.
His remarks further fuelled the political exchange, with opposition parties demanding accountability and swift action against those responsible.
AAP Leaders Express Shock
Leaders from the Aam Aadmi Party expressed shock and grief over Oberoi’s death. Party representative Gurcharan Singh Channi confirmed that Oberoi had been shot multiple times and said the party was still gathering details about the circumstances surrounding the attack.
It was also noted that Oberoi’s wife had previously contested municipal elections on an AAP ticket, though she was not elected.
As investigations continue, the killing has reignited debate over security in Punjab, particularly regarding violent crimes in urban areas. Authorities have assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
