CorruptionCases – Delhi Reports Sharp Rise in Anti-Corruption Cases During 2024
CorruptionCases – Governance transparency and economic crime monitoring in India-Delhi recorded a noticeable increase in corruption-related cases in 2024, reflecting growing scrutiny of public misconduct and financial irregularities across government systems.

Delhi saw a significant jump in cases registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act and related sections of the Indian Penal Code during 2024. Official figures released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) showed that the national capital registered 24 such cases during the year, compared to 19 cases reported in 2023. The rise becomes even more prominent when compared with 2022, when only 11 cases had been recorded.
Delhi Among Top Union Territories in Corruption Cases
Among all Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir reported the highest number of corruption-related cases with 87 registrations in 2024. Delhi followed behind, while Chandigarh registered seven cases during the same period. Puducherry recorded three cases, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands reported two. Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, along with Lakshadweep, registered one case each.
The NCRB data also highlighted the broader national picture. Maharashtra topped the list among states with 721 corruption-related cases filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act and related IPC provisions. Tamil Nadu stood second with 364 cases, followed by Karnataka with 334. Rajasthan reported 318 cases, Punjab recorded 280, and Gujarat registered 244 cases during the year.
Investigation Pendency Continues in Capital
The NCRB figures further revealed that Delhi entered 2024 with 138 pending investigations connected to corruption-related offences. During the year, authorities added 24 new cases while reopening 10 earlier matters for fresh investigation. Four cases were transferred to other states or agencies, and final reports were submitted in four cases. Meanwhile, charge sheets were filed in 19 matters. By the end of the year, 145 investigations were still pending.
Court-related data also showed active legal proceedings in these cases. A total of 37 individuals were arrested in connection with corruption allegations during the year, while 34 accused persons faced charge sheets. Courts convicted seven individuals, whereas three accused were acquitted.
Slight Decline in Economic Offence Cases
While corruption-related offences increased, Delhi recorded a minor decline in economic offences overall. NCRB statistics showed 4,524 economic offence cases in 2024, slightly lower than the 4,580 cases reported in 2023. The data indicates a relatively stable trend in financial and fraud-related crimes in the capital despite fluctuations in corruption investigations.
Murders Linked to Personal Relationships Raise Concern
Separate NCRB findings also revealed that Delhi recorded the highest number of murders associated with love affairs and illicit relationships among metropolitan cities in the country.
According to the report, the city witnessed 11 murder cases linked to romantic disputes and another 30 killings connected to illicit relationships. Investigators also identified family conflicts, property disagreements, and money disputes as major motives behind several murder incidents reported in the capital during the year.
The NCRB data provides a broader understanding of crime patterns in Delhi, showing both the continuing focus on corruption investigations and the social factors influencing violent crimes across metropolitan regions.
