Conflict – Security Tightened After Hospital Protests Over Injured Patients

Conflict –  Authorities strengthened security arrangements at a major medical institution in Manipur after protests erupted over the admission of three injured men belonging to the Kuki community. The situation remained tense for a second consecutive day, prompting officials to take precautionary measures to maintain order and prevent further unrest.

Injured Patients Moved Under Heavy Protection

On Wednesday, the three injured individuals were transferred from the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) under strict security supervision. The patients had been receiving treatment after sustaining injuries during a shooting incident reported in Leilon Vaiphei village. They were initially brought to the hospital on Monday with extensive security cover due to concerns over possible public reaction.

Demonstrations Intensify Outside Hospital

Opposition to the patients’ presence at the hospital began shortly after their admission. Protesters, including members of the Meetei and Naga communities, gathered outside the medical facility and demanded that the injured men be removed. Demonstrators alleged that the patients were linked to militant activities, though no official confirmation supporting those claims was immediately available.

As the gathering grew larger, tensions increased around the hospital premises. By Tuesday evening, a significant crowd had assembled near the main entrance, raising slogans and expressing strong objections. Police personnel initially attempted to manage the situation through crowd-control measures and appeals for calm.

Police Use Tear Gas to Restore Order

The atmosphere became increasingly volatile as the protest escalated. In response, security forces deployed tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and prevent the situation from spiraling further. The action was taken after authorities determined that the unrest posed a risk to public safety and hospital operations.

Officials subsequently reinforced security in and around the hospital complex. Additional personnel were deployed to ensure that medical services continued without disruption and to prevent any untoward incidents.

Similar Tensions Reported Earlier This Month

The latest unrest follows another sensitive incident that occurred on June 10 at the mortuary of Jawaharlal Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal East. On that occasion, police also used tear gas to disperse demonstrators who had gathered after the bodies of six villagers from the Naga community were brought to the facility.

The deceased were reportedly among a group of individuals allegedly abducted from Leilon Vaiphei village on May 13. Their remains were recovered following an extensive search operation conducted by multiple security agencies.

Large-Scale Search Operation Led to Recovery

According to a statement issued by Manipur Police, nearly 450 personnel participated in the search effort. The operation involved teams from the Manipur Police, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Assam Rifles. Sniffer dogs and forensic specialists were also deployed to assist in locating the missing individuals.

Police stated that the bodies were recovered after nearly 24 hours of continuous search activities. Authorities believe the deceased were among those taken hostage during the incident reported in May.

Investigation Continues

Law enforcement agencies said all required legal procedures are being carried out in connection with the case. Officials confirmed that investigations remain ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and to identify those responsible.

As tensions continue in parts of Manipur, authorities have urged communities to maintain peace while investigations proceed. Security agencies remain on alert, and additional measures are being taken to prevent further disturbances in sensitive areas.
