Conflict – Fresh Demands Intensify Over Missing Civilians in Manipur

Conflict – Fresh tensions surfaced in Manipur on Monday as a large group of protesters gathered in Imphal demanding the immediate release of six Naga civilians who are still missing after an alleged abduction linked to suspected Kuki militants. The demonstration, organised by the Naga People’s Union Imphal, drew participation from members of both the Naga and Meitei communities, reflecting growing concern over the continuing unrest in the state.

Rally Moves Towards Chief Minister’s Residence

The protest march began from the Tribal Market area in Imphal East district and proceeded toward the official residence of Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh. Carrying placards and raising slogans, demonstrators called for urgent government intervention regarding the missing civilians.

Security forces had been deployed heavily across the route. Officials said protesters were stopped near Palace Gate, roughly 200 metres away from the chief minister’s bungalow, after marching a short distance from the starting point. Barricades and police personnel prevented the crowd from advancing further to avoid escalation of tensions in the sensitive zone.

Despite the restrictions, authorities allowed a delegation from the organising body to meet officials and submit a memorandum addressed to the chief minister.

Demands Raised Against Alleged Militants

In the memorandum, the organisation urged the state government to take immediate action against armed groups allegedly involved in the kidnapping of six Naga men. The group also demanded stronger measures against militant outfits operating in the hill districts.

Another key demand involved the removal of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen from the state cabinet. Protesters alleged that her husband leads the Kuki National Front (Presidential), a group they accused of involvement in the abductions. The deputy chief minister has not publicly responded to the allegations made during the protest.

The memorandum further called for the cancellation of the Suspension of Operations agreement signed between the Centre, the Manipur government and various Kuki militant organisations. Protesters claimed the arrangement had failed to restore normalcy in violence-hit areas. In addition, demonstrators demanded the deportation of what they described as “Kuki refugees,” reflecting deepening ethnic divisions in the region.

Strong Slogans and Posters Mark Demonstration

Throughout the rally, protesters shouted slogans demanding the unconditional release of the missing civilians and the repeal of the Suspension of Operations pact. Several posters carried political messages targeting the deputy chief minister and questioned her position in the government.

The atmosphere remained tense but controlled as security personnel monitored the movement of the crowd. Authorities maintained strict vigilance around key government buildings to prevent clashes or disruptions.

Background of the Abduction Case

The current protest is linked to a major abduction incident reported earlier this month in Kangpokpi and Senapati districts. According to officials, more than 38 people were allegedly taken hostage by armed groups on May 13, only hours after three church leaders were killed in an ambush in Kangpokpi district.

Since then, 32 individuals have reportedly been released. Those freed include 12 Naga women and 16 members of the Kuki community. However, six Naga men remain unaccounted for, and there has been no official confirmation regarding their location or condition.

The prolonged uncertainty surrounding the missing civilians has intensified anxiety among local communities and increased pressure on the state administration to resolve the matter swiftly.

Counterclaims From Kuki Organisations

Amid the growing protests, Kuki Inpi Manipur also issued a statement alleging that 14 people from the Kuki community continue to be held captive by Naga groups. The organisation appealed for equal concern over all civilians affected by the conflict and urged authorities to ensure safe release efforts across communities.

The latest developments highlight the fragile security situation in Manipur, where ethnic tensions and armed violence continue to create instability despite ongoing peace arrangements and security operations.
