Cricket –  Scotland made an impressive start to their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup campaign by posting a competitive total of 161/5 against Ireland at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester on Saturday. The innings was built around a remarkable partnership between captain Kathryn Bryce and her sister Sarah Bryce, whose composed and attacking batting helped Scotland recover from early setbacks.

Solid Opening Before Ireland Strikes

Scotland began cautiously with openers Katherine Fraser and Darcey Carter focusing on building a steady platform. The pair negotiated the new ball effectively and guided the team to 37 without losing a wicket during the opening phase of the innings.

Ireland, however, responded quickly. Ava Canning delivered the first breakthrough when Fraser was caught in the deep after scoring 15 runs. Shortly afterwards, spinner Aimee Maguire produced a crucial wicket by dismissing Carter for 14, leaving Scotland at 37/2 and searching for stability.

Bryce Sisters Rebuild the Innings

With two wickets down inside the powerplay, Scotland needed an experienced partnership to steady the innings. Kathryn Bryce and Sarah Bryce answered that challenge with a disciplined and intelligent stand that gradually shifted momentum in Scotland’s favour.

Initially, the pair focused on rotating the strike and minimizing risk. As the innings progressed, they increased the scoring rate by finding gaps and punishing loose deliveries. Their understanding between the wickets and ability to handle Ireland’s bowling attack helped Scotland regain control.

Partnership Changes the Match

The middle overs proved decisive as both batters grew in confidence. Sarah Bryce played with positive intent, regularly finding boundaries and putting pressure on the fielding side. Kathryn complemented her approach with a blend of controlled aggression and smart shot selection.

Kathryn reached her half-century from just 31 deliveries, underlining the quality of her innings. Together, the sisters added 106 runs for the third wicket, transforming Scotland’s position from uncertain to commanding.

Ireland Responds Late in the Innings

Ireland eventually ended the influential stand when Arlene Kelly dismissed Sarah Bryce for 49. The wicket denied Sarah a deserved half-century, but her contribution had already played a major role in setting up Scotland’s total.

Kathryn continued to lead the charge after her sister’s departure. She remained aggressive in the closing overs and finished as Scotland’s highest scorer with 60 runs from 39 balls, including six boundaries and one six.

The Irish bowlers fought back effectively during the final stages of the innings. Ava Canning returned to claim additional wickets, including the important scalp of Kathryn Bryce, and finished with three wickets. Kelly and Maguire also contributed with timely breakthroughs that slowed Scotland’s progress.

Competitive Target Set for Ireland

Although Scotland managed only 19 runs in the final four overs, the earlier work done by the Bryce sisters ensured the team posted a challenging score. Their partnership provided the foundation for a total that placed Ireland under significant pressure in pursuit of victory.

At the end of 20 overs, Scotland finished on 161/5, leaving Ireland with a target of 162 runs. The total represented a strong effort in a major tournament opener and showcased Scotland’s batting strength, particularly through the outstanding performances of Kathryn and Sarah Bryce.
