Governance – The Kerala government has initiated steps to release long-pending financial assistance to a woman from Palakkad who lost her hand following an incident that was reportedly linked to negligence within the state health system.
The decision came after concerns emerged regarding a delay in the disbursement of financial support that had been announced earlier for the victim, Vinodini. According to official information, the assistance had remained pending for nearly four months, prompting intervention from the state leadership.
Government Directs Immediate Release of Funds
Chief Minister VD Satheesan stated that he acted promptly after learning about the delay. He said he contacted senior officials in the Women and Child Development Department and instructed them to take immediate action to resolve the issue.
The financial support is being provided through the department’s Sponsorship Scheme, a welfare initiative designed to assist eligible beneficiaries, including children and vulnerable individuals. Officials confirmed that arrangements are being made to clear all outstanding payments using available departmental funds.
The Chief Minister also noted that necessary directives have already been issued to ensure that the pending amount reaches the beneficiary without further delay. The move has been viewed as an effort to address concerns surrounding the implementation of welfare assistance programs.
Welfare Scheme Beneficiaries to Receive Pending Support
Authorities indicated that the assistance is not limited to Vinodini alone. Other beneficiaries covered under the same scheme are also expected to receive any pending payments as part of the clearance process.
Government sources said the objective is to ensure that eligible recipients do not face hardships because of administrative delays. Officials are reportedly monitoring the process to guarantee timely disbursement in the coming days.
Police Arrest Man Over Alleged Threat Calls
In a separate development, Kerala Police have arrested a man accused of issuing death threats to Chief Minister VD Satheesan and members of his family.
The suspect, identified as Sony Thomas from the Attingal region, was taken into custody after a complaint was filed with the Cantonment Police Station in Thiruvananthapuram. Law enforcement authorities confirmed that an investigation was launched immediately after the complaint was received.
According to police records, the accused allegedly made several calls to the official contact number linked to the Thiruvananthapuram City District Police Command Centre on Thursday evening. During these calls, he is accused of threatening the Chief Minister and his relatives.
Cyber Investigation Also Underway
Police officials stated that call records were examined during the preliminary inquiry. Investigators reportedly found repeated communication originating from the same phone number, which helped authorities trace the suspect.
Alongside the regular investigation, the Cyber Cell has begun a separate digital examination to identify the complete communication trail and determine whether additional individuals may have been involved.
During questioning, the accused allegedly informed investigators that he harbored personal resentment toward the Chief Minister. Police documents further suggest that he admitted making the threats in an attempt to attract public attention and create a sensation.
Security Measures Being Reviewed
Authorities have registered a case under applicable legal provisions and confirmed that the accused remains in custody while the investigation continues.
Police officials said they are also reassessing security arrangements following the incident. While the initial findings point toward an individual act, investigators are examining all possible angles before reaching a final conclusion.
Officials added that further information will be released once the ongoing inquiry is completed and all relevant evidence has been thoroughly reviewed.
