Cloudburst – Jammu and Kashmir Faces Rising Weather Disaster During Monsoon Season

Cloudburst – Since the arrival of the monsoon in July, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a sharp rise in cloudburst incidents, resulting in repeated flash floods, loss of lives, and extensive damage to infrastructure and farmland. Officials say the growing number of such events reflects an alarming weather trend affecting several districts across the Union Territory.

Fresh Cloudbursts Reported in Kulgam and Baramulla

Two more cloudbursts were recorded on Tuesday in Nandimarg of Kulgam district and Boniyar in Baramulla district. The sudden downpours triggered flash floods in both areas, although authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported in these latest incidents.

According to Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Centre in Kashmir, these are the newest additions to a growing list of weather-related emergencies that have unfolded during the current monsoon season.

Monsoon Season Records 44 Cloudburst Incidents

Official data shows that Jammu and Kashmir has experienced 44 cloudbursts since the beginning of the monsoon. The affected locations include several districts in the Kashmir Valley, such as Shopian, Kupwara, Bandipora, Anantnag, Pahalgam, Budgam and Ganderbal. Similar incidents have also been reported from Poonch, Rajouri, Kathua, Doda and Kishtwar in the Jammu region.

These weather events have caused widespread destruction, including damage to residential buildings, roads, bridges, public facilities and agricultural land. Authorities estimate that losses have reached several crores of rupees.

Death Toll Continues to Rise

The series of cloudbursts has so far claimed at least 35 lives across Jammu and Kashmir this season. On Monday, one woman lost her life after a cloudburst struck the Himli area of Kupwara district. Additional cloudbursts were also reported from Batkoot in Pahalgam, Budherhama in Shopian and Arin-Dardpora in Bandipora, highlighting how widespread the phenomenon has become.

Emergency teams continue to monitor vulnerable locations as intermittent heavy rainfall persists in many parts of the region.

Experts Link Increasing Incidents to Climate Change

Meteorological experts believe the rising frequency of cloudbursts is closely connected with changing climate patterns. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad explained that the interaction between the southwest monsoon and Western Disturbances creates conditions that can trigger these sudden and highly localized weather events in Jammu and Kashmir.

He noted that although weather agencies can forecast rainfall over broad regions, predicting the exact time and location of a cloudburst remains beyond the capability of current forecasting technology.

Forecasting Cloudbursts Remains a Global Challenge

According to meteorological officials, no weather model anywhere in the world can accurately identify where and when a cloudburst will occur. While modern forecasting systems are capable of estimating rainfall intensity, the abrupt atmospheric changes responsible for cloudbursts and the flash floods that follow cannot be predicted with precision.

This limitation makes disaster preparedness especially important for communities living in mountainous and flood-prone areas.

Past Tragedies Highlight the Serious Risk

One of the most severe incidents this year occurred on July 19 in Murrah-Bufliaz village of Surankote in Poonch district. A cloudburst triggered flash floods and mudslides that buried a house with eight members of a family inside. Rescue teams recovered four bodies, while four people remain missing.

The region has also witnessed devastating disasters in previous years. On August 14 last year, a massive cloudburst struck Chesoti village in Kishtwar district. The resulting floods and mudslides caused one of the deadliest weather disasters in recent years, claiming around 100 lives. Authorities recovered 68 bodies, while 32 people have still not been traced.

Why the Kashmir Himalayas Are Vulnerable

Climate specialists explain that the Kashmir Himalayas are naturally exposed to cloudburst events because the region receives moisture from two separate weather systems. Western Disturbances combine with moisture carried by the southwest monsoon, which originates from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.

As moisture-laden air rapidly rises along the Himalayan slopes, dense clouds develop over a short period. When these clouds become too heavy for the atmosphere to support, they collapse suddenly, releasing an enormous volume of rain within a limited area. This intense rainfall often leads to flash floods, landslides and mudslides, posing a significant threat to people and infrastructure across the region.
