CBI Director Extension – Government Extends Praveen Sood’s Tenure Amid Opposition Objection

CBI Director Extension –  The Centre has decided to continue Praveen Sood as the head of the Central Bureau of Investigation for another year after the high-level committee responsible for selecting the agency’s next director failed to reach a unanimous decision on the appointment.

The extension marks the second consecutive continuation for Sood, a senior Indian Police Service officer from the 1986 Karnataka cadre. His current term was due to conclude soon, but the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet opted to retain him in the position following discussions within the selection panel.

Selection Panel Meeting Leads to Fresh Extension

According to officials familiar with the matter, the decision was taken during a meeting held on Tuesday evening. The committee was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and included the Chief Justice of India along with the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Sources indicated that the panel could not arrive at a consensus regarding a new candidate for the top post in the country’s premier investigative agency. As a result, the government chose to extend Sood’s tenure by one more year to ensure administrative continuity within the bureau.

This is not the first time such a situation has emerged. In May last year, Sood was also granted a one-year extension after the committee reportedly failed to finalise a successor.

Rahul Gandhi Registers Strong Objection

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi publicly expressed disagreement with the selection process shortly after attending the meeting. In a statement shared on social media platform X, Gandhi said he had formally conveyed his dissent to the Prime Minister regarding the procedure followed for appointing the CBI director.

He stated that participating in what he described as a “biased exercise” would amount to neglecting his constitutional responsibility. Gandhi also remarked that the role of the Leader of Opposition in such committees should not be reduced to a symbolic formality.

The Congress leader further accused the government of exercising excessive control over key institutions. He alleged that investigative agencies were being used to act against political rivals and members of the media critical of the administration.

Government Yet to Respond Publicly

The government has not issued a detailed public response to Gandhi’s remarks so far. However, officials maintained that the extension decision was made through the established institutional mechanism involving all members of the selection committee.

The appointment of the CBI director is governed by a statutory process designed to ensure transparency and collective decision-making. The committee generally evaluates senior officers based on experience, administrative record, and suitability for leading the federal probe agency.

The CBI plays a major role in handling corruption cases, economic offences, and several high-profile criminal investigations across the country. Because of the agency’s influence in politically sensitive matters, the appointment of its director often attracts national attention and scrutiny from both the ruling side and the Opposition.

Focus Returns to Independence of Institutions

The latest disagreement has once again brought the debate over institutional independence into the political spotlight. Opposition parties have repeatedly raised concerns regarding the functioning of central investigative bodies, while the government has consistently rejected allegations of misuse.

For now, Praveen Sood will continue to lead the agency for another year as the government delays the announcement of a new chief. Whether consensus can be achieved in the next round of deliberations remains uncertain
