CabinetExpansion – As preparations gather pace for the formation of Karnataka’s new government, Congress legislator Basavaraj Shivannavar has expressed optimism about securing a place in the cabinet headed by Chief Minister-designate DK Shivakumar. His remarks come just days before the swearing-in ceremony scheduled to take place in Bengaluru on June 3.
Demand for North Karnataka Representation
Speaking about the upcoming cabinet formation, Shivannavar said he remains hopeful of being considered for a ministerial position. He noted that he has been aspiring for a cabinet role for several years and continues to place his trust in the party leadership.
The Congress MLA also renewed his appeal for adequate representation for communities from the North Karnataka region. According to him, leaders from the area expect their concerns and contributions to be reflected in the composition of the new ministry. While he does not anticipate inclusion during the initial phase of cabinet expansion, he said there is confidence that representation could come in a later round.
Party Leadership to Decide Key Appointments
Meanwhile, Congress MLA Ashok Kumar Rai stated that decisions regarding major organizational and government positions would ultimately rest with the party’s central leadership.
Rai indicated that the Congress high command is expected to evaluate political and regional considerations before making appointments. He refrained from seeking any specific role for himself and emphasized that discussions regarding the leadership of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) would be handled by senior party officials.
Delhi Meeting to Shape Cabinet Decisions
Attention is now focused on an important meeting scheduled in New Delhi, where Chief Minister-designate DK Shivakumar and senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah are expected to hold consultations with the party leadership.
The discussions are likely to cover cabinet appointments, organizational restructuring, and several other political matters concerning the state. Both leaders are expected to travel together from Bengaluru for the meeting. Siddaramaiah’s son and Member of the Legislative Council, Yathindra Siddaramaiah, is also expected to be present during the discussions.
Speculation Over New Faces in Ministry
Political circles have been actively discussing the possible inclusion of new leaders in the upcoming cabinet. Among the names attracting attention is Yathindra Siddaramaiah, whose potential induction has become a topic of debate within party ranks.
Sources suggest that the new administration may feature several fresh faces, while some members who served in previous governments could miss out on ministerial positions this time. The move is being viewed as part of an effort to balance experience with new leadership.
Organizational Changes Under Consideration
Party insiders indicate that additional proposals may also be reviewed during the Delhi meeting. One such suggestion reportedly involves creating a coordination mechanism aimed at strengthening communication between the government and the party organization.
Discussions are also expected regarding the possibility of appointing Deputy Chief Ministers as part of the new administrative structure. However, no final decisions have been officially announced.
Focus on Future Electoral Strategy
The Congress leadership is also believed to be considering a new president for the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee. With DK Shivakumar preparing to assume the role of Chief Minister, the party is expected to identify a leader capable of effectively managing the organization while maintaining coordination with the government.
According to party sources, an Other Backward Classes (OBC) leader is among the options being evaluated for the position. The objective is said to be strengthening the party ahead of future electoral contests, including upcoming assembly and parliamentary elections.

DK Shivakumar is set to take office as Karnataka’s next chief minister after serving as deputy chief minister over the past three years. The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for June 3 at Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru, marking the beginning of a new phase in the state’s political landscape.
