BorderSecurity – Assam Rifles Intensify Crackdown on Smuggling in Mizoram

BorderSecurity – The Assam Rifles carried out two separate operations in Mizoram that led to the seizure of illegal foreign cigarettes and the recovery of arms and ammunition allegedly linked to activities along the India-Myanmar border. Officials confirmed on Friday that two individuals were taken into custody during the operations conducted in Aizawl district.

According to a defence spokesperson, security personnel acted on intelligence inputs regarding the suspected storage of illegal weapons in the Tuikhawtlang area. Acting swiftly, Assam Rifles teams coordinated with the Mizoram Police and launched a joint night operation on Thursday. The search operation continued for several hours before authorities located and recovered a .32 mm pistol, five live rounds of ammunition, and 16 empty cartridge cases.

Joint Operation Conducted in Aizawl District

Officials said the operation was carefully planned to prevent any possible movement of illegal arms in the region. Security teams maintained close coordination throughout the search, which ultimately resulted in the detention of one suspect linked to the recovered weapons.

The defence spokesperson stated that the operation demonstrated the preparedness and alertness of the Assam Rifles in tackling unlawful activities in sensitive border regions. The recovered firearm and ammunition, along with the detained individual, were later handed over to the Aizawl Police Station for further investigation and legal proceedings.

Foreign Cigarettes Worth Lakhs Seized

In another operation carried out in the Zokhawsang area of Aizawl district, Assam Rifles personnel intercepted a smuggling network involved in transporting foreign-made cigarettes believed to have been brought into India illegally from Myanmar.

During the raid, officials apprehended one alleged smuggler and seized contraband cigarettes estimated to be worth nearly Rs 42.9 lakh. Authorities also confiscated a vehicle reportedly used for transporting the illegal goods.

The accused, along with the seized consignment and vehicle, was handed over to the Customs Preventive Force in Aizawl for further action under relevant laws. Officials said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to disrupt illegal trade routes operating in the northeastern region.

Border Areas Remain Under Watch

Security agencies have increased surveillance across Mizoram due to rising concerns over illegal cross-border movement involving narcotics, weapons, and smuggled goods. Officials noted that the Assam Rifles continues to maintain a strong presence along the India-Myanmar border to prevent unlawful activities and preserve stability in the region.

The defence spokesperson added that such operations are regularly conducted based on intelligence inputs and are aimed at dismantling networks involved in trafficking and smuggling.

Mizoram Emerging as Key Smuggling Corridor

Authorities have repeatedly expressed concern over Mizoram becoming a major transit route for illegal substances and contraband entering Northeast India. The state shares long and largely unfenced borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, making monitoring difficult in remote areas.

Among the substances frequently trafficked from Myanmar are methamphetamine tablets, commonly referred to as Yaba, and heroin. Yaba tablets, often called “party drugs,” contain a combination of methamphetamine and caffeine and are banned in India because of their addictive and harmful nature.

Officials said illegal consignments are commonly routed through several districts of Mizoram, including Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip. Security agencies have increased operations in these areas to curb smuggling and strengthen border enforcement.

The recent seizures, officials said, underline continued efforts by security forces to counter illegal trade activities and maintain law and order across the border state.
