AviationProbe – DGCA Investigation Intensifies After Fatal Baramati Crash
AviationProbe – Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday confirmed that a comprehensive inquiry by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation is progressing into the plane crash that claimed the life of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. He urged the public and political leaders to refrain from speculation until the official findings are made available.

The crash occurred on January 28 near the Baramati airstrip in Pune district, when a Learjet aircraft went down shortly after takeoff. Pawar, along with the pilot, co-pilot, and two others on board, lost their lives in the accident. The incident sent shockwaves across the state’s political and administrative circles.
Black Box Recovered, Technical Analysis Underway
According to Fadnavis, the aircraft’s flight data recorder, commonly referred to as the black box, has already been retrieved. He noted that investigators have begun examining technical data and other evidence to determine what led to the crash.
Calling the DGCA-led inquiry “critical,” the chief minister emphasized that aviation investigations require careful analysis of flight records, maintenance logs, and operational procedures. “The investigation is being conducted in accordance with established aviation safety protocols,” he said, adding that conclusions should only be drawn once the process is complete.
Officials familiar with aviation accident procedures explained that such investigations typically assess multiple factors, including mechanical performance, weather conditions, pilot communication, and air traffic coordination. The recovery of the black box is considered a significant step in establishing a factual timeline of events.
Questions Raised by Rohit Pawar
The chief minister’s remarks came in response to comments made by Rohit Pawar, MLA and nephew of the late Ajit Pawar. On Tuesday, Rohit Pawar publicly raised concerns about the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
He suggested that certain aspects of the incident warranted deeper scrutiny and alleged that sabotage could not be ruled out. Calling for a broader inquiry, he urged that multiple expert agencies be involved to ensure transparency and accountability.
While acknowledging awareness of Rohit Pawar’s statements, Fadnavis clarified that he had not personally reviewed all of them in detail. However, he said that any doubts expressed by family members or the public deserve to be examined within the framework of the ongoing probe.
Government Seeks Detailed Central Investigation
Fadnavis also revealed that he had written to the Union Civil Aviation Ministry soon after the accident, requesting a thorough investigation. He maintained that a detailed probe was essential not only to establish the cause of the crash but also to identify any gaps in safety procedures.
“If there are shortcomings in our civil aviation systems, they must be addressed,” the chief minister said. He added that lessons drawn from such tragedies could help improve safety standards for both public officials and civilian passengers.
The DGCA, India’s aviation regulatory authority, is responsible for overseeing aircraft operations and ensuring compliance with safety norms. In cases involving fatal crashes, the agency typically conducts technical evaluations in coordination with other specialized bodies.
Focus on Aviation Safety and Accountability
The Baramati crash has renewed attention on aviation safety measures, particularly concerning chartered and private aircraft used by political leaders and corporate executives. While authorities have not indicated any preliminary findings, officials reiterated that the investigation will examine every possible angle before submitting a final report.
Political leaders across party lines have expressed condolences and called for a transparent inquiry. For now, state officials have appealed for restraint in public commentary, stressing that verified information will emerge through the official investigation process.
As the DGCA continues its work, the state government has assured full cooperation with central authorities. The final report is expected to shed light on the technical and operational factors behind one of Maharashtra’s most significant aviation tragedies in recent years.
