AviationPolicy – Andhra Pradesh has taken a major step toward strengthening its aviation sector with the launch of a comprehensive policy framework designed to improve connectivity, attract investment, and support long-term economic growth. The State government has approved the Andhra Pradesh Aviation Policy 2026–31, introducing a fresh vision that replaces the existing aviation framework and sets clear goals for the next five years.
Vision to Strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s Aviation Presence
The newly approved policy aims to significantly increase Andhra Pradesh’s share in India’s aviation market. At present, the State contributes only a small fraction of the country’s total passenger traffic. Through large-scale infrastructure development and network expansion, authorities plan to raise that share steadily over the coming decades. Passenger handling capacity is expected to increase substantially, positioning the State as a stronger participant in the national aviation ecosystem.
Expanding Airport Access Across the State
A central feature of the policy is improving access to air travel for residents. The government has outlined plans to ensure that citizens can reach an airport within a reasonable distance by developing nine new airports and enhancing existing aviation facilities. The strategy also includes the creation of regional waterdromes and upgrades to smaller domestic airstrips, helping improve connectivity in underserved regions.
Industry representatives have described the initiative as a pioneering effort that extends beyond traditional passenger transportation. The policy seeks to transform Andhra Pradesh into a major destination for aviation-related industries, including aerospace manufacturing, logistics, and aircraft maintenance services.
Focus on Aerospace and Employment Generation
The framework aligns closely with the State’s broader aerospace and defence ambitions. Dedicated facilities for aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO), aerospace production centres, and supporting component manufacturing units are planned under the policy.
Officials expect these initiatives to create substantial employment opportunities for young professionals. Jobs are likely to emerge across airports, airlines, technical training institutions, logistics companies, engineering firms, and related support industries. The emphasis on skill development is expected to strengthen the State’s industrial workforce while attracting new business investments.
Major Infrastructure Projects on the Horizon
The policy also introduces significant changes to Andhra Pradesh’s aviation infrastructure network. Commercial flight operations at the existing civil enclave in Visakhapatnam are expected to transition once the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport becomes operational. The new airport is planned as a major aviation hub with global connectivity ambitions.
In addition, the proposed greenfield airport at Amaravati is envisioned as a future international gateway for the State’s capital region. Authorities believe the project will play a key role in supporting economic development and international travel demand in the years ahead.
Another area receiving attention is the Puttaparthi–Bengaluru corridor, which is being developed as an emerging aerospace zone by leveraging its proximity to Bengaluru’s established aviation industry and Anantapur’s industrial potential.
Regional Flights and Cargo Growth Receive Priority
The policy addresses long-standing concerns related to regional air connectivity by encouraging more small-aircraft operations and better utilisation of regional airstrips. Incentives such as local aircraft parking facilities, overnight operational support, and route viability funding are expected to help airlines maintain services on emerging routes.
Cargo transportation forms another major pillar of the strategy. Despite being a leading exporter of marine products, Andhra Pradesh currently has limited international air cargo handling capability. The government aims to dramatically increase cargo capacity through dedicated logistics hubs connected to ports, industrial corridors, food-processing centres, and export clusters.
This expansion is expected to support key sectors including seafood, pharmaceuticals, horticulture products, and electronics manufacturing, helping businesses improve access to global markets.
Broader Economic Impact Beyond Airports
Business leaders have stressed that the aviation policy should be viewed as an integrated economic development initiative rather than solely an airport expansion programme. The framework includes support for drone technologies, warehousing infrastructure, export promotion activities, and tourism development.
For micro, small and medium enterprises, the policy is expected to open opportunities in aviation catering, ground services, specialised packaging, cold-chain logistics, airport retail operations, and precision engineering. To simplify implementation, approvals and clearances will be coordinated through the Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Limited.
By linking aviation development with the State’s long-term economic vision, Andhra Pradesh is positioning itself for accelerated industrial expansion, stronger logistics capabilities, and enhanced connectivity that could reshape its role in India’s growth journey.
