Aviation – India Strengthens Air Travel Plans Amid West Asia Tensions

Aviation –  India is preparing precautionary measures across key sectors as authorities closely monitor the growing instability in West Asia. Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu said on Wednesday that while the current geopolitical situation has not created any immediate threat for the country, the government is taking proactive steps to minimise any possible impact on aviation and passenger services.

Speaking to reporters during his visit to Ranchi, the minister stated that every major sector must remain cautious and ready for unexpected developments. He explained that the aviation industry, in particular, is assessing risks and preparing detailed plans for the short, medium and long term to ensure uninterrupted operations if global conditions worsen.

Government Monitoring Airfare Trends Closely

Naidu also addressed concerns surrounding rising domestic travel expenses amid international uncertainty. According to him, the Centre has already introduced several measures aimed at protecting passengers from sudden airfare increases.

He said taxes and operational costs linked to aviation turbine fuel have been reduced in recent months to support airlines and maintain fare stability. Airport-related charges, including landing and parking fees, have also been lowered to reduce pressure on carriers. Recently, the Delhi government cut value-added tax on aviation turbine fuel from 25 percent to 7 percent, a move expected to benefit both airlines and passengers.

The minister noted that nearly five lakh travellers use domestic flights every day across the country. Authorities are continuously reviewing ticket prices and travel demand patterns. If passenger demand rises further, additional aircraft and flight services will be introduced to improve connectivity and prevent fare spikes.

New Regional Aviation Expansion Plans Announced

During the Ranchi visit, Naidu launched several passenger-focused initiatives and shared details of the upcoming revised UDAN regional connectivity programme. The next phase of the scheme, known as UDAN 2, is expected to be rolled out soon with an estimated allocation of nearly Rs 29,000 crore.

Under the expanded programme, the government plans to develop 100 additional airports and around 200 helipads across the country over the next decade. The initiative is aimed at improving access to air travel in smaller towns and remote regions.

The minister also announced the introduction of Udan Yatri Cafes at airports to provide affordable food facilities for passengers. He said the government remains committed to making air travel easier, cheaper and more comfortable for ordinary citizens.

The Union Cabinet had earlier approved the modified UDAN programme for a 10-year period with central financial support. The scheme is expected to further strengthen India’s regional aviation network and improve transport access in underserved areas.

Aircraft Crash Investigation Nearing Completion

Responding to questions regarding last year’s aircraft accident in Ahmedabad, Naidu said the official investigation has entered its final stage. He stressed that the inquiry is being conducted in a transparent and accountable manner.

The minister pointed out that passengers from multiple countries were onboard the aircraft involved in the incident, making the investigation internationally significant. He added that the final report would be released soon and would meet global standards of scrutiny and credibility.

Focus on Jharkhand Air Connectivity

Naidu further stated that the Centre would prioritise stronger international flight connections for Ranchi’s Birsa Munda Airport while also expanding domestic air services in the region.

According to the minister, annual passenger traffic at the airport has grown significantly over the last five years, increasing from 17 lakh to 27 lakh travellers. He also confirmed that several districts in Jharkhand, including Dumka, Hazaribag, Chaibasa and Daltonganj, are expected to receive air connectivity in the near future under the regional expansion plan.
