Aviation – Air India Flight Returns to Delhi After Midair Technical Concern

Aviation –  An Air India flight bound for San Francisco was forced to return to Delhi on Wednesday after pilots identified a technical issue while the aircraft was flying over Chinese airspace. The aircraft, carrying more than 240 people including crew members, landed safely at the Indira Gandhi International Airport after remaining airborne for over seven hours.

Flight AI173 had departed from Terminal 3 of Delhi airport at 3:09 am with 230 passengers and 15 crew members onboard. According to airline officials, the aircraft had already completed nearly three and a half hours of its journey when the cockpit crew noticed a technical irregularity during the flight. Following standard aviation safety procedures, the pilots decided to discontinue the long-haul journey and return to the Indian capital as a precautionary measure.

Pilots Chose Precautionary Return

Airline sources stated that the aircraft was flying above Chinese territory when the issue was detected. Officials clarified that the decision to turn back was taken purely out of caution and was not treated as an emergency situation. Sources familiar with the matter said that if the situation had been considered critical, the aircraft would have been diverted to a nearby airport instead of completing the return journey to Delhi.

The aircraft then remained in the air for another three and a half hours before safely approaching Delhi airport. Aviation experts note that precautionary returns are a standard practice in global aviation whenever technical concerns arise during long international routes.

Fuel Release Conducted Before Landing

Before landing, the aircraft spent nearly 45 minutes circling above Delhi to release excess fuel. Since the San Francisco route is a long-haul international service, the aircraft had departed with a full fuel load. Industry procedures generally require large aircraft to reduce weight before landing when they return shortly after departure.

Sources explained that the fuel dumping process was necessary to ensure a safe landing weight for the aircraft. After completing the required procedures, the flight landed safely without any reported injuries or onboard complications.

Air India Issues Official Statement

Air India later confirmed the incident through an official statement. The airline said the Delhi-San Francisco service returned to the departure airport after a technical issue was identified during the flight.

The airline added that the aircraft safely landed in Delhi and would undergo a detailed technical examination in accordance with company safety standards. Air India also stressed that passenger and crew safety remains its top operational priority.

Assistance Provided to Passengers

Following the unscheduled return, Air India said arrangements were being made to minimise inconvenience for travellers. Ground staff at Delhi airport assisted passengers with refreshments, accommodation, and alternate travel plans.

The airline said some passengers were being rebooked on alternative flights, while others were offered hotel stays or rescheduling options depending on their travel preferences. Airport authorities and airline staff remained engaged throughout the process to support affected travellers.

The incident once again highlights the strict safety protocols followed by airlines during international operations. Aviation professionals often emphasise that precautionary returns are part of routine safety management and are intended to avoid risks during long-distance flights.
