AssamPolitics – Opposition Bloc Expands as Raijor Dal Joins Congress Alliance

AssamPolitics –  The opposition landscape in Assam witnessed a notable shift on Thursday as the Raijor Dal formally joined the Congress-led alliance, strengthening the collective front ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The move is being seen as a significant step towards consolidating anti-incumbency sentiment in the state.

Assam opposition alliance expands

Alliance gains new strength

Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi announced that his party has reached an agreement with the Congress to work together politically. Addressing the media alongside Assam Congress president and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi, he confirmed that both parties have signed a memorandum of understanding to formalise their partnership.

With this addition, the opposition alliance now comprises six parties, including the Congress, Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), CPI(M), CPI(ML), and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC). The expanded coalition is expected to play a more coordinated role in the upcoming elections.

Focus on leadership and electoral strategy

Akhil Gogoi stated that his party would actively support Gaurav Gogoi as the alliance’s chief ministerial face. He indicated that Raijor Dal would work closely with its allies to strengthen grassroots outreach and mobilise voters across constituencies.

The announcement signals a shift towards a more unified campaign strategy, which had previously been hindered by disagreements over seat-sharing arrangements. Earlier negotiations between the Congress and Raijor Dal had stalled due to differences, but recent developments suggest a willingness to move past those issues.

Criticism of the ruling government

During the press interaction, Akhil Gogoi criticised the current administration led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, claiming that public dissatisfaction has been growing. He alleged that the governance model under the BJP has negatively impacted Assam’s social harmony.

He also urged voters to come together to challenge what he described as corruption and divisive politics. According to him, the upcoming elections present an opportunity for citizens to bring about a change in leadership.

Seat-sharing and candidate updates

Despite the late-stage alliance, both Congress and Raijor Dal have already declared candidates in several constituencies. Congress has announced 87 candidates so far, with one withdrawal, while Raijor Dal has fielded 13 candidates. Other alliance partners, including AJP, CPI(M), and APHLC, have also named their nominees.

There are currently only two constituencies where both Congress and Raijor Dal have candidates in the fray, indicating that most differences have been resolved or minimised to avoid vote splitting.

Civil society played a role

The alliance formation follows a recent appeal from a group of 171 prominent individuals from Assam, including academics, professionals, and social activists. The group had urged opposition parties, particularly Congress and Raijor Dal, to put aside their differences in the interest of a broader democratic objective.

In their joint statement, the citizens highlighted the importance of the upcoming elections, describing it as a crucial moment for the state’s political direction. They emphasised the need for a united opposition to ensure a balanced and democratic governance framework.

Looking ahead to elections

With polling scheduled for April 9, the strengthened opposition alliance is expected to intensify its campaign efforts across the state. The coming weeks will be crucial as parties work to connect with voters and present a cohesive alternative to the ruling government.

The formation of a broader alliance could reshape the electoral dynamics, particularly in closely contested constituencies. Whether this unity translates into electoral success will depend on how effectively the coalition manages coordination and public messaging.
