AssamPolitics – Minister Nandita Gorlosa Switches to Congress Ahead of Polls
AssamPolitics – In a significant political development ahead of the Assam assembly elections, senior minister Nandita Gorlosa has resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the Congress. The move is being seen as a notable shift in the state’s political landscape, especially in the hill districts.

Congress Prepares Gorlosa for Haflong Seat
Soon after joining the Congress on Sunday, Gorlosa was positioned as the party’s candidate for the Haflong constituency in Dima Hasao district. The seat was earlier allocated to Congress leader Nirmal Langthasa, who stepped aside to accommodate her candidature. Party leaders described the decision as a strategic move to strengthen their position in the region.
The BJP, on the other hand, has nominated Rupali Langthasa as its candidate for the same constituency, setting up a direct contest between the two parties in the area.
Party Welcomes Leader with Strong Regional Influence
In an official statement, the Congress expressed satisfaction over Gorlosa’s induction, highlighting her political experience and connection with local communities. The party credited her with consistently representing the interests of people in Dima Hasao over the past several years.
Leaders within the Congress also pointed out that her presence could enhance the party’s outreach in tribal regions, where local leadership and grassroots engagement play a crucial role in electoral outcomes.
Criticism of State Government Policies
The Congress used the occasion to raise concerns about the policies of the current state government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma. In its statement, the party alleged that the government has prioritised corporate interests over the welfare of tribal communities, particularly in matters related to land use.
These remarks reflect the broader political narrative that is likely to dominate the election campaign, with both parties expected to focus on development, land rights, and regional representation.
Formal Announcement Expected
While Gorlosa has already joined the Congress, the party is expected to formally announce her candidature for the Haflong seat on Monday. Senior leaders, including state general secretary Nirmal Langthasa, were present during her induction into the party, underlining the importance of the development.
The coming days are likely to see intensified political activity in the region as parties prepare for a closely watched electoral battle in Assam.
