Focus on Crop Diversification

During a review meeting held at the State Secretariat on Wednesday, the Chief Minister urged officials to encourage farmers to adopt diversified cropping patterns suited to changing climatic conditions. Referring to experiences from the previous agricultural season, he directed departments to provide clear guidance on selecting suitable agricultural, commercial, and horticultural crops based on regional requirements and weather forecasts.

Naidu said adapting cultivation practices to emerging climate challenges would be critical for maintaining productivity and protecting rural livelihoods. He emphasized that farmers should be equipped with practical information that enables them to make informed decisions before every cropping season.

Push for Natural Farming Practices

The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of expanding natural farming across Andhra Pradesh. According to him, international consumers are increasingly favouring produce backed by organic and natural farming certifications, creating new opportunities for farmers in domestic and overseas markets.

He instructed officials to launch awareness campaigns aimed at educating cultivators about scientific farming techniques, certification procedures, and internationally accepted agricultural standards. Naidu added that he would personally participate in outreach initiatives to encourage farmers to embrace environmentally sustainable cultivation methods.

Measures for Key Agricultural Commodities

Special attention was given to major crops grown in the state, including chilli, tobacco, and Totapuri mangoes. The Chief Minister reviewed existing challenges faced by producers and discussed measures to strengthen market support systems.

To safeguard the interests of tobacco farmers, he directed officials to immediately organise discussions with tobacco buyers and industry stakeholders. He also called for the exploration of modern storage infrastructure that would allow farmers to preserve their produce and avoid distress sales during periods of low market prices.

Officials were further instructed to prepare plans encouraging the cultivation of pulses that currently enjoy strong market demand. The government believes that increasing pulse production could help farmers improve profitability while also supporting food security objectives.

Data-Driven Policy Decisions

Naidu underlined the importance of maintaining continuous monitoring of crop conditions and market inventories. He said accurate and timely data would help the government take informed policy decisions and respond effectively to fluctuations in production and pricing.

The Chief Minister also advocated greater value addition in both agriculture and horticulture sectors. Developing processing facilities and strengthening supply chains, he noted, could create additional income opportunities for growers while improving the competitiveness of Andhra Pradesh’s agricultural products.

Fisheries Sector Also Under Review

Apart from agriculture and horticulture, the meeting examined issues affecting the aquaculture industry. Naidu instructed officials to hold a joint consultation involving fish farmers, aquaculture associations, and aqua-feed manufacturers to identify solutions to sector-specific concerns.

The discussions are expected to focus on improving coordination between stakeholders and addressing challenges that affect production costs and market performance.

Government Reaffirms Support for Farmers

Reiterating the alliance government’s commitment to the farming community, the Chief Minister said protecting farmers from climate-related disruptions and market volatility remains a top priority. He stated that the government would continue working on policies and support mechanisms aimed at improving farm incomes and strengthening rural economic stability.

Agriculture Minister K. Atchannaidu, Chief Secretary Sai Prasad, and senior officials from the agriculture, horticulture, and finance departments were present during the review meeting.
