Accident – Three Workers Die After Entering Drain Tank in Pune Facility

Accident – A tragic incident in Maharashtra’s Pune district claimed the lives of three workers on Sunday evening after they entered a drainage tank at a mushroom processing facility. Authorities believe the deaths were caused by exposure to toxic gases inside the confined space.

Incident Occurred During Routine Cleaning Work

According to officials from Pune Rural Police, the accident took place around 4:30 pm in Belasar village, located in the Purandar taluka. The facility falls under the jurisdiction of Jejuri Police Station. Initial findings suggest that one of the workers had gone inside the drainage tank for cleaning purposes but did not return for an extended period.

Concerned by his absence, two fellow workers descended into the tank one after the other in an attempt to rescue him. Unfortunately, neither of them managed to come back out, turning a routine maintenance task into a fatal situation within minutes.

Rescue Efforts by Locals and Authorities

Local residents quickly gathered at the site after learning about the situation. In a desperate attempt to save the trapped workers, they used a JCB machine to break open the concrete slab covering the drainage tank. Once access was gained, all three workers were pulled out and rushed to the Jejuri Rural Hospital.

Despite the swift response, doctors declared all three individuals dead upon arrival. Medical teams indicated that there were no signs of life when the workers were brought in, suggesting that the exposure had already proved fatal.

Preliminary Findings Point to Toxic Gas Exposure

Police officials stated that early observations indicate the presence of harmful gases inside the tank. These gases likely caused the workers to lose consciousness shortly after entering the confined space. Without adequate ventilation or protective equipment, such environments can become deadly within seconds.

Authorities noted that the absence of safety protocols or proper monitoring might have contributed to the incident. Investigators are now working to determine whether standard safety measures were followed at the facility.

Victims Identified as Migrant Workers

The deceased have been identified as Pintu Rajesh Prasad (23), Vyas Soham Kumar (22), and Gautam Ramsuran Kushwaha (36). All three workers were originally from Deoria district in Uttar Pradesh and had been employed at the mushroom processing unit.

Their sudden deaths have raised concerns about the working conditions and safety awareness among laborers, especially those engaged in hazardous tasks without adequate supervision.

Investigation Underway

Police have registered a case of accidental death and have initiated further investigation into the matter. Post-mortem examinations are currently being conducted to confirm the exact cause of death.

Officials stated that they will also examine whether the company adhered to industrial safety norms, including the use of protective gear and gas detection measures before allowing workers to enter confined spaces.
