Accident – Storm Triggers Boat Capsize at Bargi Dam, Nine Dead

Accident –  A tragic boating incident in Madhya Pradesh’s Bargi Dam near Jabalpur has claimed at least nine lives after a cruise vessel overturned during a sudden storm on Thursday evening. Authorities confirmed that 22 people have been rescued so far, while search efforts are still underway to locate those missing.

Sudden Weather Change Led to Disaster

According to officials, the boat was carrying 29 passengers along with two crew members when it encountered severe weather conditions while returning from an evening trip on the reservoir. Strong winds and turbulent water caused the vessel to lose balance, allowing water to flood in before it eventually capsized. The suddenness of the storm left little time for passengers and crew to respond effectively.

Multi-Agency Rescue Efforts Continue

Rescue operations resumed early Friday, involving coordinated efforts from the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Heavy equipment, including hydraulic cranes, has been deployed to recover the overturned boat from the dam. Officials stated that the focus remains on locating survivors and retrieving bodies from the submerged wreckage.

Challenging Conditions Underwater

Divers engaged in the rescue mission described extremely difficult conditions inside the sunken vessel. Twisted metal structures, protruding iron rods, and poor underwater visibility have significantly slowed recovery work. The cramped interior of the damaged boat has made movement hazardous, increasing the risk for rescue personnel.

Emotional Scenes During Recovery

Rescue teams encountered deeply distressing moments while retrieving victims. One diver recounted finding a woman tightly holding her child even after death, making the recovery process particularly difficult. Such scenes have underscored the human cost of the tragedy and the emotional toll on rescue workers.

Casualties and Ongoing Search

Officials confirmed that five bodies, including those of one child and four adults, have been recovered by the paramilitary diving team so far. The overall death toll has reached at least nine, while efforts continue to locate those still unaccounted for. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of the toll rising as search operations progress.

Survivor Accounts Raise Safety Concerns

Among the survivors, Delhi resident Sangeeta Kori shared her experience, stating that the trip to the dam was unplanned and meant for leisure. She alleged that safety arrangements on the boat were insufficient. According to her, life jackets were not worn initially and were only handed out after water began entering the vessel, leading to panic among passengers.

Kori also raised concerns about possible overcrowding, claiming that more people were on board than permitted, including children without proper tickets. She further alleged that warnings from individuals on the shore about worsening weather conditions were ignored by the operator.

Government Assures Investigation

Authorities have acknowledged the seriousness of the incident and confirmed that a detailed investigation will be carried out once rescue operations conclude. Madhya Pradesh Tourism Minister Dharmendra Bhav Singh Lodhi stated that accountability will be fixed and strict action will be taken against those found responsible for any lapses.

The tragedy has once again brought attention to safety standards in recreational boating. Officials are expected to review existing guidelines and enforcement mechanisms to prevent similar incidents in the future. For now, rescue teams continue their work, while families of victims await updates with growing concern.
