Accident –  A devastating road accident in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district has claimed nine lives and left several others injured, prompting condolences from top national leaders and renewed attention on safety measures in hilly terrains.

Leaders Express Grief Over Tragic Incident

President Droupadi Murmu conveyed deep sorrow over the fatal accident, offering condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. In a message shared publicly, she also wished a quick recovery for those injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed similar sentiments, stating that he was distressed by the incident. He extended sympathy to the bereaved families and expressed hope for the swift recovery of the injured victims. Their messages reflect the gravity of the tragedy and the national concern it has generated.

Vehicle Plunges Into Gorge in Valparai Hills

The accident occurred in the Valparai hills, a region known for its winding mountain roads and sharp bends. According to initial reports, a tourist van carrying 13 passengers lost control while navigating a steep section of the road.

Police officials stated that the vehicle slipped off the 13th hairpin bend and plunged down to the 9th bend below, falling into a deep gorge. The sudden loss of control is believed to have caused the vehicle to skid before it went off the road.

The van was reportedly descending after a sightseeing trip in the area when the incident took place. The challenging terrain and sharp curves of the hill road may have contributed to the accident, though authorities are continuing to examine all possible factors.

Victims and Rescue Efforts

The passengers were tourists from Perinthalmanna in Kerala. Among the 13 occupants, nine lost their lives in the crash, while the remaining individuals sustained injuries, some of them critical.

Local police and emergency services responded quickly after receiving information about the accident. Senior officers, including the Deputy Superintendent of Police and local inspectors, reached the site to oversee rescue operations.

A large-scale emergency response was launched, with 16 ambulances dispatched to the location. Of these, 13 ambulances transported injured victims to the Government Hospital in Pollachi for treatment. Rescue teams worked in difficult conditions to safely retrieve those trapped in the wreckage.

All injured individuals have been admitted to the hospital and are currently receiving medical care. Authorities have stated that the victims were rescued promptly and given immediate attention, which may have helped prevent further loss of life.
