Entertainment – Actress Urmila Matondkar has shared how one of her most celebrated dance numbers came together despite an exceptionally demanding work schedule, revealing that she had almost no time to prepare before stepping onto the set. Speaking on the dance reality show India’s Best Dancer, the actor looked back at the making of “Chamma Chamma” from China Gate while also juggling the shoot of the title track from Jaanam Samjha Karo. Her candid recollections highlighted the intense pace of film productions during that period and the commitment required to deliver memorable performances.

Balancing Two Major Film Projects

Recalling those hectic days, Urmila explained that she was working double shifts between two separate productions. She said she had only managed to visit the rehearsal briefly before filming “Chamma Chamma.” When the choreography was demonstrated, she was overwhelmed by its complexity and wondered how she would be able to perform such demanding dance movements without proper practice.

The actress admitted that the choreography appeared extremely challenging at first glance. However, with little time available, she had no choice but to rely on her determination and experience once the cameras started rolling.

Overnight Shoot Left No Time for Rehearsal

Sharing more details, Urmila revealed that the night before filming “Chamma Chamma,” she had been shooting the title song for Jaanam Samjha Karo. Although the schedule was expected to conclude in the early hours of the morning, the shoot extended until around 6 a.m.

Only a few hours later, she reached Mehboob Studio for the “Chamma Chamma” shoot, beginning work at 9 a.m. without any proper rehearsal. Looking back on the experience, she remarked that even today she wonders how she managed to complete the performance under such physically demanding circumstances.

Rajkumar Santoshi’s Words Became a Source of Motivation

Urmila also recalled an inspiring conversation with China Gate director Rajkumar Santoshi before filming the song. According to the actress, the filmmaker spoke about creating a dance number that would stand alongside the most iconic songs ever produced in Indian cinema.

His confidence and ambition encouraged her to approach the performance with renewed determination. She said those words changed her mindset, helping her focus on delivering a performance that audiences would remember for years to come.

Terence Lewis Highlights the Song’s Global Recognition

During the same episode, choreographer and judge Terence Lewis discussed the enduring popularity of “Chamma Chamma.” He pointed out that the song gained international attention when its music was featured in the Hollywood musical Moulin Rouge.

Lewis noted that the Academy Award-winning film introduced the popular track to a global audience, demonstrating how Indian film music crossed cultural boundaries.
