Accident – A senior citizen was left critically injured following an alleged hit-and-run incident in Pune, prompting strong reactions from political leaders and calls for swift police action.
Serious Injuries Reported After Roadside Incident
Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said his mother sustained severe injuries after being struck by a car in what he described as a deliberate act. The incident reportedly took place on Tuesday in Pune, Maharashtra. According to the BJP leader, the vehicle involved fled the scene immediately after the collision.
In a statement shared on social media, Poonawalla said his mother would soon undergo surgery due to the extent of her injuries. Describing the incident as deeply distressing, he appealed for public prayers and urged law enforcement authorities to take urgent action against the accused.
Appeal to Police and State Leadership
Poonawalla publicly requested the Pune City Police to identify and arrest the individual responsible. He also tagged Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in his message, urging accountability and justice. Emphasising the emotional toll of the incident, he said seeing his mother injured at her age had been both painful and infuriating for the family.
Police officials have not yet released an official statement detailing the circumstances of the incident or confirming whether an arrest has been made.
CCTV Footage Shared by Family
Adding further details, Shehzad Poonawalla’s brother, Tehseen Poonawalla, shared what he said was CCTV footage of the incident on social media. He alleged that the act appeared intentional based on the visuals.
According to Tehseen, their mother had stepped out of the car while their driver and executive assistant were refuelling at a petrol station. While she was standing nearby, a vehicle allegedly struck her and sped away without stopping.
Medical Update and Police Interaction
Providing an update later, Tehseen Poonawalla said the injuries were serious and would require major medical intervention. He stated that his mother would need hip surgery and would have a rod implanted permanently.
He also said he had spoken directly with senior police officials, including the Joint Commissioner of Police and the Deputy Commissioner of Police. Expressing frustration and grief, he said the family was seeking strict action, whether the incident was intentional or a result of reckless driving followed by an attempt to escape responsibility.

Authorities are currently reviewing the available evidence, including CCTV footage, to identify the vehicle and driver involved. Officials have indicated that further details will be shared once the investigation progresses.
