Yemen-Conflict Intensifies After Deadly Houthi Assaults on Government Forces
Yemen-The conflict in Yemen witnessed a significant escalation on Thursday after Iran-backed Houthi fighters launched coordinated attacks on military positions held by forces loyal to the internationally recognized government. According to Yemeni government officials, at least 30 soldiers were killed and more than 50 others were injured in the strikes, which targeted military camps in the central province of Marib and the eastern province of Hadramout. The officials shared the information anonymously because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
Coordinated attacks strike key military camps
Government sources said the attacks focused on military camps operated by government forces in Marib and Hadramout. While the Yemeni army confirmed that its personnel suffered casualties, it did not release an official death toll. The assaults marked one of the most serious military incidents since the informal truce that took effect in April 2022, a period during which large-scale fighting between the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition had largely subsided.
Houthis describe operation as response to troop buildup
Houthi military spokesperson Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree said the operation involved ballistic missiles and drones. In a public statement, he claimed the strikes were carried out in response to what the group described as an increasing deployment of Saudi-backed forces in eastern Yemen.
Saree also asserted that the attacks resulted in hundreds of casualties among government-aligned fighters and caused extensive damage to military camps, storage facilities, vehicles and weapons. However, those figures have not been independently verified, and Yemeni government authorities have not confirmed the claims.
Calls for continued military readiness
Following the attacks, Saree urged Houthi supporters to remain prepared for what he described as possible Saudi aggression. He also called for continued military action against Saudi-backed forces wherever they are stationed.
The latest statements reflect the deep divisions that continue to shape Yemen’s prolonged conflict despite the relative reduction in large-scale combat over the past several years.
International reaction to the attacks
The United States mission to Yemen expressed sympathy to the families of the soldiers killed in Marib and Hadramout. In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the mission condemned the attacks, describing them as another example of violence carried out by the Houthis against the Yemeni people.
The statement highlighted continuing international concern over the fragile security situation and the risk that renewed military confrontations could further undermine efforts aimed at maintaining stability.
Years of conflict continue to shape Yemen
Yemen has remained engulfed in conflict since 2014, when Houthi fighters took control of the capital, Sanaa. The internationally recognized government was forced to relocate to Saudi Arabia after losing control of the city.
In 2015, a Saudi-led coalition entered the conflict in support of the Yemeni government, launching military operations intended to restore it to power. Despite years of fighting, neither side has secured a decisive military victory, leaving the country locked in a prolonged and costly conflict.
Although the April 2022 truce significantly reduced major battles, it did not produce a comprehensive political settlement. Periodic clashes and military operations have continued in several parts of the country, underscoring the fragile nature of the ceasefire.
Ongoing regional tensions remain a concern
The Houthis have linked their recent military escalation, including actions affecting shipping routes in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, to what they describe as Saudi Arabia’s air and sea restrictions imposed on Yemen since 2015. The Saudi-led coalition has maintained that its actions are part of broader security measures related to the conflict.
The latest attacks highlight the continuing volatility in Yemen and raise fresh concerns that renewed military activity could complicate diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a lasting political resolution.
