Politics – Trinamool Congress Reshuffles Leadership Amid Internal Challenges
Politics – The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has announced a series of organisational changes after a National Working Committee meeting held at the Kolkata residence of party chief Mamata Banerjee. The decisions are aimed at strengthening the party structure at both national and state levels while addressing ongoing administrative and political challenges.

Senior Leaders Assigned National Responsibilities
As part of the latest restructuring, senior party figures Derek O’Brien and Dola Sen have been appointed Joint Secretaries at the national level. According to an official party statement, both leaders will work alongside National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and assist in managing key organisational responsibilities across the country.
The party also introduced changes within its West Bengal leadership team. With state president Subrata Bakshi currently unable to perform his duties due to health-related concerns, Chandrima Bhattacharya has been entrusted with the responsibility of handling the role. She will be supported by a group of vice presidents, including Sajda Ahmed and Nayna Bandyopadhyay.
Youth, Women’s and Student Wings Receive New Appointments
The Trinamool Congress has also confirmed leadership positions across its major organisational wings. Saayoni Ghosh will continue to serve as the president of the party’s youth wing, while Mala Roy has been named president of the All India Trinamool Mahila Congress. Priyanka Adhikary has been appointed to lead the student wing.
In the communications department, Kalyan Banerjee and Derek O’Brien will represent the party as national spokespersons. At the state level, Kunal Ghosh has been assigned the role of official spokesperson.
High-Level Meeting Held Amid Political Developments
The leadership announcements came on the same day that a significant meeting took place at Mamata Banerjee’s residence. The gathering was attended by several senior legislators and parliamentarians amid reports of increasing differences within sections of the party.
Among those present were MLAs Bina Mondal, Ashima Patra, Madan Mitra, Firhad Hakim, Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, Biman Banerjee, Ashok Kumar Deb and Kunal Ghosh. The parliamentary delegation included Abhishek Banerjee, Derek O’Brien, Dola Sen, Mala Roy, Sudip Bandyopadhyay and Kalyan Banerjee.
Party Plans Legal Challenge Over Opposition Leader Appointment
Following the meeting, Kalyan Banerjee stated that the party disagrees with the appointment of Ritabrata Banerjee as Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly. He argued that the decision was not in accordance with established procedures and announced that the party would seek judicial intervention.
According to Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress plans to approach the Calcutta High Court and file a petition questioning the legality of the appointment. The party intends to begin legal proceedings at the earliest opportunity.
Allegations Against BJP and Court Action Planned
Banerjee also alleged that Trinamool Congress workers have been subjected to violence and legal harassment. He claimed that the party would pursue both legal and political avenues to address what it describes as attacks on its members and the filing of fabricated cases.
He stated that the party would continue its opposition through democratic protests as well as through court proceedings.
Rebel Faction Continues to Challenge Party Leadership
The developments come against the backdrop of ongoing disagreements within the Trinamool Congress. A group of rebel legislators, including expelled leaders Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, has claimed support from a significant number of MLAs in the West Bengal Assembly.
The faction has opposed the party leadership’s decision to nominate Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay for the position of Leader of the Opposition. Ritabrata Banerjee later asserted that his group had been recognised as the principal opposition bloc in the Assembly and that their claim had received acceptance from the Speaker.
He further stated that more than two-thirds of the legislators elected on the Trinamool Congress symbol had supported the faction’s position. Despite the disagreement, he said the group continues to regard Mamata Banerjee as an important guiding figure and hopes to receive her advice while functioning as an opposition force within the Assembly.
