Pakistan – Boat Tragedy and Building Collapses Raise Safety Concerns
Pakistan – Seven members of a family died after a tourist boat overturned in Saifullah Lake in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said. One person was still missing as rescue workers continued their search in the lake near Kalam, a popular tourist destination in Swat district.

Family boat trip ends in tragedy
The boat was carrying eight relatives who had gone sightseeing when it capsized on Wednesday, according to a district police official. Rescue personnel recovered the bodies of seven victims from the water, while police teams and local residents joined efforts to locate the remaining passenger.
Authorities did not immediately provide details about what caused the boat to overturn. The incident has drawn attention to safety arrangements for visitors travelling to mountain resorts and lakes during the tourism season.
Lahore academy collapse kills 14 children
The lake accident came a day after a deadly roof collapse at a private tuition academy in Lahore’s Kahna area. At least 14 children were killed when part of the building gave way on Tuesday, while several others suffered injuries, local media reported.
Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Imran Nazeer said around 20 people had been trapped beneath the debris. The 14 children who died were brought to Kahna Tehsil Headquarters Hospital without signs of life, he said.
Emergency teams later completed the search and rescue operation at the academy. Rescue 1122 spokesperson Farooq Ahmed said a female teacher and eight children were shifted to Lahore General Hospital with multiple injuries. Five of the injured children were reported to be in critical condition.
Rescue teams describe damage at academy
Ahmed said the victims were very young and had been attending classes in two rooms at the academy when the ceilings collapsed. The fallen structure trapped children inside before rescue workers could reach them.
The Human Rights Council of Pakistan expressed concern over the incident and called for greater accountability. The organisation said authorities must ensure that buildings used for educational activities in residential areas meet basic safety requirements.
It also alleged that inadequate inspection of construction quality at private academies and similar facilities had contributed to preventable risks for children and families.
Repeated collapses underline construction risks
Building and roof collapses have been reported in several parts of Pakistan in recent years. Concerns have frequently been raised about poor-quality materials, unapproved structures and weak enforcement of building regulations.
On Monday, two young sisters died and their cousin was injured after the boundary wall of their home collapsed in Alipur tehsil of Muzaffargarh district in Punjab. Officials were examining the circumstances surrounding that incident.
Earlier this month, three members of a family were killed after the roof of an under-construction room collapsed in Jaranwala tehsil of Faisalabad district, according to media reports.
The latest incidents have again highlighted the need for regular safety checks at public-facing buildings, homes under construction and private learning centres. Authorities are expected to review the affected sites as rescue operations and investigations continue.
