NuclearExpansion – North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s military strength, including expanding its nuclear capabilities, during a major meeting of the ruling party. According to state-run media reports released on Tuesday, Kim emphasized the need to continue building powerful defense assets while adapting to an increasingly complex international environment.
Party Meeting Reviews National Priorities
The second plenary session of the ninth Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea was held over three days beginning Saturday. The gathering focused on evaluating policy implementation during the first half of the year and reviewing objectives established during the party congress held earlier in February.
During the meeting, officials reiterated the importance of maintaining and expanding the country’s nuclear deterrent. Party leaders described nuclear forces as a crucial element of national defense and an essential component of military strategy.
Nuclear Program Remains a Key Focus
According to the official report, participants unanimously agreed that preserving and strengthening North Korea’s status as a nuclear-armed state remains the most effective approach for addressing evolving military and political challenges around the world.
Kim reportedly called for accelerated efforts to improve defense technologies and military assets. State media said he instructed authorities to continue advancing strategic capabilities through domestic development programs and long-term military planning.
Expansion of Naval and Border Infrastructure
The meeting also highlighted plans to speed up the construction of a strategic guided missile cruiser with a displacement of 10,000 tonnes. The project was first approved by party leadership earlier this year and remains one of the country’s major defense initiatives.
Officials additionally stressed the importance of reinforcing security along the border with South Korea. Kim reportedly urged the construction of new naval facilities and additional military infrastructure to strengthen national defense preparedness.
In recent months, North Korea has repeatedly focused on enhancing frontline military readiness. Earlier this year, Kim ordered the deployment of new artillery systems near the border and called for stronger combat capabilities among frontline units.
Criticism of South Korea-US Cooperation
Pyongyang once again identified South Korea as its principal security adversary and strongly criticized defense cooperation between Seoul and Washington.
Particular attention was directed toward the Nuclear Consultative Group, a bilateral framework designed to strengthen extended deterrence measures. North Korean officials accused the mechanism of preparing military strategies aimed at the country and condemned recent discussions between the allies.
The state media report claimed that military planning conducted through the consultative framework represented a direct threat to North Korea’s security interests.
Leadership Changes Announced
The plenary meeting also resulted in notable changes within the country’s political leadership structure.
Jo Yong-won was elected as a secretary of the party’s Central Committee, restoring him to one of the most influential positions in the government. He previously held senior responsibilities within the country’s legislative leadership.
At the same time, Kim Jae-ryong was removed from several key party positions, including membership in the Politburo Presidium. No official explanation was provided for the decision. However, reports suggested the reshuffle may be connected to an ongoing corruption investigation involving a senior military political official.
Coal Industry Identified as Economic Priority
Alongside defense issues, economic development remained an important topic of discussion. Party leaders described the coal sector as a strategic foundation of the national economy and called for extensive modernization efforts across mining regions.
Kim reportedly stated that overcoming longstanding inefficiencies within the industry is critical not only for achieving current economic goals but also for supporting future national development.
The meeting concluded with officials expressing confidence in implementing the leadership’s long-term vision. They emphasized that improvements in the coal industry could play a significant role in strengthening overall economic performance in the years ahead.
The February party congress, the country’s most important political event since 2021, established a new five-year roadmap covering economic policy, national defense, diplomatic strategy, and leadership restructuring.
