Nigel Farage –  Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has resigned as the Member of Parliament for Clacton, saying local voters should decide whether his conduct merits their continued support as he faces a standards investigation.

Farage announced his decision in a speech on Tuesday, framing the forthcoming by-election as a contest between “the people” and the political establishment. He said he wanted constituents to judge his actions directly rather than wait for the outcome of the inquiry.

Inquiry Focuses on Financial Declarations

The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards is examining claims that Farage did not register financial interests linked to a payment of £5 million received before the 2024 general election. British media reports said the money was not declared in the register of members’ interests within the required period after he entered Parliament.

Under the House of Commons code of conduct, MPs must disclose relevant financial interests and benefits received during the 12 months before an election. Such declarations must generally be made within one month of taking a seat in Parliament.

The investigation is also considering allegations related to security support and accommodation reportedly provided to Farage by a close friend. The commissioner’s inquiry has not yet reached a conclusion.

Farage Denies Breaking Parliamentary Rules

Farage has rejected suggestions that he breached the rules. He said he had followed parliamentary requirements and had not used public funds improperly.

While acknowledging that he received a substantial amount of money, Farage described it as an unconditional gift. He maintained that the payment did not amount to wrongdoing and said the claims against him had been presented unfairly.

His resignation means a by-election will be held in Clacton, the Essex constituency he won at the 2024 general election. The vote will give residents an immediate opportunity to decide whether to return him to Parliament.

Family Security Concerns Cited in Decision

Farage also referred to media coverage involving his family as a major factor behind his decision. He said the publication of an image connected to his daughter’s home had raised concerns about her security.

He accused sections of the media of targeting and vilifying him, describing the incident as the point at which he decided to resign his seat and seek a fresh mandate from voters.

The move has drawn strong criticism from political opponents, who questioned whether the resignation was a genuine attempt to seek public approval or a campaign tactic.

Starmer Calls Resignation a Political Stunt

Prime Minister Keir Starmer dismissed Farage’s decision as a “desperate stunt,” signalling that Labour does not view the by-election as a conventional electoral contest.

British media reported that Labour would not put forward a candidate in Clacton. A party spokesperson reportedly described the contest as a “circus,” suggesting the party did not want to add legitimacy to what it considers a politically manufactured vote.

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch also said her party would not contest the seat. She described the planned poll as a “fake by-election,” adding to the unusual political circumstances surrounding the vote.

Clacton Vote Expected to Draw National Attention

The Clacton by-election is likely to attract close attention because of Farage’s national profile and Reform UK’s growing role in British politics. It will also test whether voters are prepared to back him despite the ongoing questions over financial disclosures.

The parliamentary standards process will continue independently of the election. Its findings could determine whether any further action is required, regardless of the result in Clacton.
