Family Confirms Engineer’s Death
Heramb Karmarkar, a 30-year-old marine engineer from Pune, had been reported missing after the Cyprus-flagged container vessel GFS Galaxy came under attack while passing through the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday. On Wednesday, his family confirmed that he had lost his life in the incident.
His father-in-law, Vivek Tandon, shared the heartbreaking news while urging the Indian government to ensure that Karmarkar’s body is returned home with dignity. He said the family now hopes the authorities will facilitate the safe repatriation of his remains.
Rescue Efforts and Official Response
Following the attack, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that 10 Indian nationals aboard the vessel had been rescued, while one crew member had initially remained unaccounted for. The Indian Embassy in Oman has been actively coordinating with Omani authorities as part of the ongoing search and rescue efforts.
The embassy also confirmed that it has remained in close contact with local officials, the vessel’s management, and other relevant stakeholders to provide assistance to the affected crew and their families. India has expressed appreciation to the Omani authorities for extending support during the emergency response.

Reacting to the latest incident, India described the continuing attacks on commercial vessels operating in the region as deeply concerning. The government reiterated the importance of protecting civilian shipping routes that are vital to international trade and maritime transport.

US Attributes Attack to IRGC
According to the United States Central Command, the GFS Galaxy was attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The US alleged that the operation was carried out by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), resulting in one crew member going missing during the incident.
The US military further stated that Iran had failed to demonstrate compliance with previous commitments concerning the safety of commercial navigation despite earlier warnings. It added that the United States would continue measures aimed at reducing threats to civilian mariners and commercial vessels operating through the strategic waterway.
