The visit of Royal Netherlands Navy vessel HNLMS De Ruyter to Kochi has highlighted the growing maritime engagement between India and the Netherlands. According to the Ministry of Defence, the deployment reflects increasing cooperation between the two countries in the Indo-Pacific region and underlines their shared interest in regional maritime security.

Dutch Naval Ship Receives Ceremonial Welcome in Kochi

HNLMS De Ruyter, a modern De Zeven Provincien-class frigate of the Royal Netherlands Navy, reached Kochi on May 4 during its ongoing Indo-Pacific deployment. The vessel was welcomed with full naval honours at Kochi Harbour after being escorted by Indian Navy fast interceptor craft.

The Dutch ship is currently on a five-month operational deployment across the Indo-Pacific and is expected to participate in multiple maritime interactions and exercises with partner nations during the mission. The arrival of the vessel in Kochi also coincided with the visit of a senior Dutch delegation to the Southern Naval Command.

Senior Dutch Delegation Holds Maritime Discussions

The visiting delegation includes Major General Rob De Wit, Deputy Commander of the Royal Netherlands Navy, along with Netherlands Ambassador to India Marisa Gerards. During the visit, the delegation met Rear Admiral Prakash Gopalan, Chief of Staff of the Southern Naval Command.

Officials from both sides discussed several issues related to maritime cooperation and explored possibilities for enhancing collaboration between the two navies. The talks focused on strengthening operational coordination, training exchanges, and broader naval engagement in the region.

Tribute Paid at Southern Naval Command War Memorial

As part of the official engagements, the Dutch representatives visited the Southern Naval Command War Memorial in Kochi. The ceremony coincided with the Netherlands’ National Remembrance Day observed on May 4.

Major General Rob De Wit and Ambassador Marisa Gerards laid wreaths at the memorial to honour military personnel who sacrificed their lives in service to their nation. The tribute was described as a gesture of mutual respect and shared military traditions between the two countries.

Focus on Training and Defence Collaboration

The Defence Ministry stated that the delegation is scheduled to participate in several bilateral activities aimed at expanding defence cooperation. The visitors will tour professional training establishments under the Southern Naval Command and observe advanced naval simulators and modern training systems used by the Indian Navy.

The delegation is also expected to visit Cochin Shipyard Limited to understand India’s shipbuilding capabilities and examine potential opportunities for industrial and defence cooperation in the maritime sector.

Naval Exercise Planned Before Departure

Before departing Kochi, HNLMS De Ruyter will participate in a Passage Exercise, commonly known as PASSEX, with an Indian naval vessel. Such exercises are conducted to improve coordination, communication, and operational compatibility between friendly navies operating together at sea.

The Ministry of Defence noted that the exercise is expected to further improve interoperability and strengthen professional ties between the Indian Navy and the Royal Netherlands Navy. Additional professional and social exchanges between naval personnel from both nations are also planned during the visit.
