Loureiro Nuno Dead: MIT Director and Professor Shot at Massachusetts Home

Loureiro Nuno Dead: On Tuesday,  Nuno Loureiro, an MIT professor, passed away after being shot at his Massachusetts home. The 47-year-old Portuguese professor of nuclear physics and engineering was shot many times on Monday, December 15, and passed away in the hospital the following day.

Law officials responded to the gunshots at an apartment at around 8:30 p.m. after learning of the incident. Loureiro was taken by ambulance right away to a hospital in Boston, where he passed away while receiving treatment for gunshot wounds.

The offender is still at large and the investigation is still ongoing. There has been no arrest in the case, according to the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office, which described it as “an active and ongoing homicide investigation.”

According to CBS News, Loureiro’s neighbor believed someone was kicking in a door at the apartment complex after hearing heavy bangs at the door on Monday night.

According to his faculty website, Loureiro studied physics at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon in 2000 and earned a PhD in the subject from Imperial College London in 2005. In 2016, Loureiro became a faculty member at MIT. The fusion scientist and theoretical physicist was well-known for his magnetized plasma dynamics study, which earned him awards.
