Leadership – New York Student Earns Top NJROTC Role Through Years of Dedication
Leadership – A New York high school student has emerged as a remarkable example of youth leadership after being appointed Battalion Commanding Officer of her school’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) unit. Seventeen-year-old Riddhi Chauhan now leads nearly 300 cadets at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School in Queens, holding the highest student position within the programme. Her appointment reflects years of commitment, discipline and consistent performance in one of the school’s most respected leadership initiatives.

A Daily Routine Built Around Responsibility
Riddhi’s day begins well before regular school hours. Four days each week, she reaches campus before 7 a.m. to supervise drill practice and prepare cadets for the day’s activities. Along with managing military drills, she oversees battalion operations, coordinates training programmes and supports the well-being of fellow cadets. Balancing these responsibilities alongside her academic studies has required careful planning and dedication, making her leadership journey especially noteworthy.
Progress Through Multiple Leadership Roles
Before reaching the highest student rank, Riddhi served in several important positions within the NJROTC unit, steadily expanding her leadership experience. Her responsibilities included Academic Commander, STEM Commander, Platoon Leader and Inspection Commander. During her tenure as Academic Commander, she helped guide the school’s team to the second round of the Leadership and Academic Bowl for two consecutive years while also contributing to a first-place finish in a national academic competition. As STEM Commander, she led cadets in designing and building the unit’s first SeaPerch underwater robot, providing hands-on engineering experience for the team. Throughout her journey, she also mentored more than 200 cadets, helping younger students develop confidence and leadership skills.
Programme Encourages Character and Teamwork
The Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps is a leadership development programme supported by the United States Navy and offered in high schools across the country. Its focus extends beyond military education by encouraging character development, teamwork, discipline and responsible citizenship. Riddhi initially joined the programme to strengthen her leadership abilities and contribute positively to her school community. Over time, that experience inspired her long-term goal of serving as a Naval Officer.
Personal Values Continue to Shape Leadership
Riddhi says her leadership style has also been influenced by her spiritual and cultural upbringing. She credits the teachings of BAPS Swaminarayan spiritual leader Mahant Swami Maharaj, along with participation in the organisation’s youth development activities, for helping her build values such as humility, service and compassion. According to her, these principles have guided her interactions with fellow cadets and strengthened her ability to lead with responsibility rather than authority.
Looking Ahead to a Military Career
Reflecting on her years in the programme, Riddhi believes the most valuable lesson she has learned is that effective leadership is measured by the positive influence a person has on others. She also highlights the importance of remaining consistent during challenging situations and embracing opportunities beyond one’s comfort zone, including advanced Sail Training in Newport, Rhode Island. As she prepares for the next stage of her journey, Riddhi will attend the Naval Academy Preparatory School, an important pathway toward admission to the United States Naval Academy. Her achievements represent years of determination and a clear commitment to public service and leadership.
Riddhi is the daughter of Ruchika and Dilip Chauhan, whose family traces its roots to Jaipur, Rajasthan, before settling in New York. She is also the sister of Kahini Gupta Chauhan, who works in the medical profession. The family’s emphasis on education, service and leadership has played a meaningful role in supporting Riddhi’s accomplishments and future aspirations.
