Justice – A major legal ruling in Pakistan has reinforced the convictions of two men found guilty in a high-profile assault case involving a French tourist and her children.
A Pakistani court has upheld the death penalties handed down to two men convicted in a widely publicized criminal case involving the assault of a French tourist on a motorway near Lahore. The ruling marks a significant development in a case that sparked widespread public concern and intensified discussions about women’s safety across the country.
High Court Rejects Appeals
The decision was delivered by the Lahore High Court, which dismissed appeals submitted by the two convicts, Abid Ali and Shafqat Ali. The men had challenged a judgment issued in 2021 by an anti-terrorism court that found them guilty of multiple offences, including gang rape, kidnapping, robbery, and terrorism-related charges.
With the appeals rejected, the original punishments remain in place. The court’s ruling effectively confirms the death sentences along with other penalties imposed during the earlier trial.
Incident That Shocked the Nation
The crime took place on September 9, 2020, when a French woman of Pakistani origin was travelling with her three children on the Sialkot-Lahore Motorway during the night. According to investigators, the family’s vehicle stopped after running out of fuel, leaving them stranded on the roadside.
Authorities stated that the woman remained inside the locked vehicle while seeking assistance. However, the attackers allegedly approached the car, broke a window, and forced her out before carrying out the assault at gunpoint. Investigators also reported that the suspects stole valuables, including cash, jewellery, and bank cards, before fleeing the location.
Investigation Led to Swift Arrests
Law enforcement agencies launched a large-scale investigation soon after the incident. Officials relied on mobile phone data analysis and forensic evidence gathered from the crime scene to identify the suspects.
Investigators said DNA findings played a crucial role in linking the accused to the crime. During legal proceedings, the survivor reportedly identified both men. Court records also indicated that one of the convicted individuals made a confession before a magistrate.
Based on the evidence presented, the anti-terrorism court delivered its verdict in March 2021, sentencing the men to death while also imposing life imprisonment and additional jail terms for related offences.
Public Reaction and Debate
The case generated strong reactions throughout Pakistan and became a focal point in discussions about public security and violence against women. Demonstrations and public campaigns emerged following details of the incident, with many demanding stronger protections for women and stricter law enforcement measures.
The controversy deepened after comments made by then Lahore police chief Umer Sheikh. His remarks regarding the victim’s travel choices attracted criticism from civil society groups, rights activists, and members of the public, who argued that responsibility for the crime rested solely with the perpetrators.
Court Supports Prosecution’s Position
During the appeal proceedings, defence lawyers questioned the reliability of the prosecution’s evidence and argued that weaknesses existed in the case presented during trial. Prosecutors, however, maintained that the convictions were backed by substantial forensic findings, witness testimony, and investigative records.
After reviewing the matter, the Lahore High Court concluded that the evidence presented against the convicts was sufficient to support the original judgment. As a result, the court dismissed the appeals and allowed the previously issued sentences to stand.
