With decades of experience in gas distribution and industrial solutions, the company views its role as a critical but often unseen contributor to modern society.
Longstanding Experience in Global Gas Supply
Founded in Japan, Tomoe Shokai has built its business around the supply and distribution of a wide range of gases, including medical gases, industrial gases, specialty chemical gases, and products used in advanced manufacturing. The company operates an extensive domestic network in Japan and has expanded internationally with offices and facilities across 10 countries, totaling 14 overseas locations.
According to Executive Officer Masahiro Harada, the company’s mission is to provide essential support services that operate behind the scenes. He describes the business as an “invisible infrastructure” that enables key industries and public services to function efficiently.
Expansion Across Southeast Asia
Tomoe Shokai’s international expansion began in earnest in 1989 when the company entered Thailand. The initial focus was on supplying sterilization-related gases, particularly for industrial and healthcare applications. As Japanese manufacturers expanded their operations in the region, the company broadened its services to meet the growing demand for specialized gas products.
Over time, Tomoe Shokai extended its network into several Southeast Asian markets, including the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, and Malaysia. The expansion allowed the company to support a wide range of industries, including automotive manufacturing and advanced production facilities operated by Japanese businesses overseas.
India Becomes a Strategic Hub
The company’s relationship with India started in 2008 through a partnership aimed at sourcing materials used in sterilization gas production. Following the success of that collaboration, Tomoe India was established in 2012.
Since then, India has become an important part of the company’s regional operations. The Indian unit not only supports domestic demand but also serves as a production and supply base for neighboring Southeast Asian markets.
New Gujarat Facility Planned for 2027
As India’s economy continues to expand, Tomoe Shokai is preparing for its next phase of investment in the country. The company plans to open a new facility in Gujarat during the 2027 fiscal year.
The upcoming site is expected to manufacture medical gas products and related equipment while also supporting industries such as electronics and semiconductors. In addition to production activities, the facility will function as a logistics and storage center, helping ensure stable and efficient distribution across multiple sectors.
Company officials believe the project will play a significant role in addressing increasing demand from healthcare providers, sanitation-related industries, and technology manufacturers.
Focus on Healthcare and Environmental Responsibility
Harada noted that India’s medical sterilization sector still has considerable room for growth, with a large share of related equipment currently sourced from overseas suppliers. As healthcare standards improve and economic development continues, demand for advanced medical gas systems is expected to rise.
He emphasized that Tomoe Shokai aims to support this development by providing reliable gas supplies and modern equipment designed to meet industry requirements. Environmental sustainability also remains a key consideration for the company, with its facilities incorporating measures intended to reduce environmental impact.
Drawing on Japan’s Environmental Experience
Tomoe Shokai believes its experience in Japan offers valuable lessons for emerging markets. The company points to the environmental challenges Japan faced during its period of rapid economic growth in the twentieth century and the solutions that were developed to address pollution and industrial impacts.
