Energy Cooperation – India and Venezuela Explore Wider Strategic Partnership Opportunities
Energy Cooperation – Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodriguez has expressed appreciation for her recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, highlighting a series of discussions aimed at expanding cooperation between the two countries. The talks, held on June 4 during her official visit to India, focused on several key sectors including transport, healthcare, energy, agriculture, science, and technology.

Focus on Expanding Bilateral Engagement
Following the meeting, Rodriguez shared details of the discussions through posts on social media, describing the interaction as constructive and forward-looking. She noted that both sides explored opportunities to strengthen collaboration across multiple sectors while identifying fresh areas for strategic partnerships that could deliver long-term benefits to the people of both nations.
The Venezuelan leader emphasized that the dialogue reflected a shared commitment to advancing mutual interests and building stronger ties through practical cooperation. She also pointed to the importance of creating new avenues for collaboration that support economic development and innovation.
Commitment to Shared Growth
Rodriguez stated that India and Venezuela reaffirmed their intention to deepen relations in the years ahead. According to her remarks, both countries remain committed to working together to promote prosperity and contribute positively to the broader interests of developing nations across the Global South.
The meeting forms part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to enhance engagement between the two countries, which have maintained cooperation in several strategic areas over the years.
Energy Sector Remains a Key Priority
Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the significance of energy cooperation in the discussions. Speaking on Thursday, Secretary (East) Rudrendra Tandon said India and Venezuela possess complementary strengths that make them natural partners in the energy sector.
He noted that Venezuela has recently become one of India’s leading crude oil suppliers, underlining the growing importance of the relationship. Discussions during Rodriguez’s visit therefore placed considerable emphasis on developing a stronger energy partnership, covering both exploration and production activities as well as downstream operations.
According to Tandon, Venezuela views India as a dependable long-term market, while India sees value in securing reliable energy resources. This alignment of interests creates opportunities for expanded collaboration in the sector.
Interest Beyond Oil and Gas
Officials also discussed broadening economic cooperation beyond energy. Tandon described Venezuela as a country with substantial natural resources, including critical minerals, gold, diamonds, and other valuable reserves.
He said both sides explored the possibility of cooperation in mining and resource assessment. Future discussions may focus on evaluating reserve potential and identifying areas where technical expertise and investment can contribute to mutually beneficial outcomes.
The expansion of cooperation into mining and other resource-based industries could open new opportunities for businesses and government agencies from both countries.
Five-Day Visit Strengthens Diplomatic Ties
Rodriguez is currently on a five-day visit to India, aimed at strengthening political and economic engagement between the two nations. India has long been regarded as an important partner for Venezuela, particularly in the fields of energy and investment.
Indian public sector enterprises have already invested significantly in Venezuela’s energy industry. Both countries are now looking at ways to build on that foundation and further enhance cooperation across a wider range of sectors, reinforcing a partnership that continues to gain strategic importance.
