Diplomacy – US President Donald Trump has postponed a decision on a proposed agreement involving Iran after holding an extensive discussion with senior members of his national security team at the White House Situation Room. The meeting lasted for roughly two hours and focused on key elements of the draft arrangement currently under consideration.
According to a statement issued by a White House official on Friday, the President has not yet reached a conclusion on the proposal. The official said Trump would only support an agreement that aligns with American interests and adheres to the administration’s core conditions. The statement also reiterated the long-standing US position that Iran must not obtain a nuclear weapon.
White House Yet to Explain Delay
No immediate explanation was provided regarding why a final decision was not announced following the meeting. Observers had expected greater clarity after Trump indicated earlier in the day that he would review the matter with his national security advisers and determine the next course of action.
Before the meeting, Trump shared details of several conditions he believes should be included in any future understanding with Tehran. His comments were posted on his social media platform, where he described the meeting as an opportunity to make a final assessment of the proposed framework.
Key Conditions Outlined by Trump
Among the requirements highlighted by the US President was a commitment from Iran that it would never develop or possess a nuclear weapon. Trump also called for the immediate reopening of the Hormuz Strait to allow unrestricted commercial shipping traffic in both directions without any fees or restrictions.
In addition, he stated that any underwater explosive devices that may be present in the region should be removed. These measures, according to Trump, are necessary to ensure maritime security and maintain stability in one of the world’s most important energy transit routes.
Nuclear Material Remains a Central Concern
Trump also addressed the issue of Iran’s enriched nuclear material. He said the stockpile, which he described as being buried deep underground following US military strikes carried out in June of last year, should be recovered and eliminated.
According to his remarks, the process would involve coordination between the United States, Iran, and the International Atomic Energy Agency. The objective, he said, would be to locate the material, bring it to the surface, and ensure its destruction under appropriate oversight.
The President further stated that a US naval blockade would be lifted under the proposed arrangement. However, additional details regarding implementation or timelines were not immediately released.
Iran Signals Different Focus in Talks
Meanwhile, Iranian officials presented a different perspective on the ongoing discussions. Speaking to Iranian state media on Friday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said the current negotiations have a limited scope.
Baghaei noted that the talks underway do not include discussions related to Iran’s nuclear programme. His comments suggested that the subjects being addressed are narrower than those referenced by Trump in his public statements.

With Washington yet to announce a final decision and Tehran offering a different interpretation of the negotiations, uncertainty remains over the future of the proposed agreement.
