Diplomacy – Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Oslo on Monday for a two-day official visit, becoming the first Indian prime minister to travel to Norway in more than four decades. The visit marks an important step in strengthening diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two countries as India seeks deeper engagement with Nordic nations.
The Indian leader reached Norway after concluding his engagements in Sweden as part of his ongoing five-country international tour. His arrival in Oslo received special attention after Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store personally welcomed him at the airport, highlighting the importance both nations are placing on the visit.
Senior officials present during the reception included Norway’s Ambassador to India May-Elin Stener and India’s Ambassador to Norway Gloria Gangte, along with several other dignitaries from both governments.
Norway Highlights Expanding Partnership With India
Soon after receiving PM Modi, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store shared a public message welcoming the Indian leader and described the visit as a historic occasion. He noted that the trip comes after more than 40 years since the last visit by an Indian prime minister to Norway and expressed hope for stronger cooperation between India, Norway, and the Nordic region.
According to Norwegian officials, discussions during the visit are expected to focus on trade, climate cooperation, renewable energy, and wider global challenges affecting both regions. The Nordic countries have increasingly shown interest in expanding partnerships with India in technology, sustainability, and economic development.
Ambassador May-Elin Stener also described the visit as a special moment for bilateral relations. She said the trip reflects the growing ambitions shared by India and Norway and underlines the importance of closer engagement between the two democracies.
Focus on India-Nordic Summit and Bilateral Talks
During his stay in Oslo, PM Modi is scheduled to participate in the third India-Nordic Summit, where leaders from Nordic nations are expected to discuss regional cooperation and global economic priorities with India.
The Indian prime minister will also hold formal bilateral talks with PM Jonas Gahr Store. In addition, he is expected to meet King Harald V and Queen Sonja as part of the official engagements planned during the visit.
Officials from both countries have indicated that economic cooperation will remain a major area of discussion. PM Modi and his Norwegian counterpart are also set to attend the India-Norway Business and Research Summit, which aims to encourage collaboration between companies, researchers, and investors from both sides.
Trade and Investment Remain Key Priorities
India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated that the visit provides an opportunity to review ongoing cooperation and identify new areas for growth. Key sectors expected to receive attention include trade and investment, clean energy technology, maritime industries, and the blue economy.
The ministry also highlighted the significance of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement in expanding economic opportunities. Officials believe the agreement could help improve commercial exchanges and encourage fresh investments between India and European partners, including Norway.
Bilateral trade between India and Norway stood at nearly USD 2.73 billion in 2024, according to official figures shared by the ministry. Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global has also emerged as a major investor in Indian financial markets, with investments estimated at close to USD 28 billion.
Long Diplomatic Ties Continue To Strengthen
Relations between India and Norway date back to 1947, when Norway became one of the early countries to recognise independent India. Since then, both nations have maintained stable diplomatic ties based on shared democratic values and cooperation in several global forums.
Over the years, the relationship has expanded beyond traditional diplomacy to include areas such as climate policy, gender equality, renewable energy, maritime affairs, and human rights. Regular exchanges between ministers, parliamentarians, and officials from both countries have continued to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
The current visit is expected to add fresh momentum to the partnership at a time when India is actively broadening its engagement with European and Nordic nations across strategic and economic sectors.
