Diplomacy – Jaishankar and Trinidad Leaders Expand Bilateral Cooperation Agenda
Diplomacy – External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday held detailed discussions with Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and senior Cabinet members to further strengthen diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries.
The meeting took place during Jaishankar’s official visit to the Caribbean nation as part of his ongoing multi-country diplomatic outreach. The talks focused on advancing commitments made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier visit to Trinidad and Tobago and identifying new opportunities for collaboration across multiple sectors.
Focus on Expanding Bilateral Partnerships
Sharing details of the discussions through social media, Jaishankar said both sides conducted a comprehensive review of existing bilateral ties and exchanged ideas aimed at enhancing future cooperation. The leaders explored several initiatives intended to deepen engagement in development, education, energy, and cultural exchange.
According to the minister, the discussions also emphasized practical implementation of commitments announced during Prime Minister Modi’s previous visit. Both countries expressed interest in broadening cooperation in areas considered important for long-term growth and regional development.
Made-in-India Laptops Distributed to Students
One of the major highlights of the visit was the joint presentation of Made-in-India laptops to school students in Trinidad and Tobago. Jaishankar attended the event alongside Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, describing the initiative as a step toward promoting education, digital learning, and greater opportunities for young people.
The laptop distribution programme was linked to commitments announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his earlier engagement with the Caribbean nation. Officials said the initiative reflects India’s broader focus on supporting educational and technological development in partner countries.
Agreements Signed Across Key Sectors
During the visit, India and Trinidad and Tobago also finalized several agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in important sectors. These agreements covered tourism development, renewable energy projects, quick impact development initiatives, and traditional medicine.
One agreement focuses on solar energy initiatives involving the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs building in Trinidad and Tobago. Another agreement supports the establishment of an Ayurveda Chair, highlighting India’s continued efforts to promote traditional healthcare systems globally.
Officials from both countries described the agreements as meaningful steps toward strengthening long-term institutional cooperation and expanding people-to-people connections.
Modi’s Earlier Visit Strengthened Relations
The latest diplomatic engagement follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Trinidad and Tobago during his July 2025 five-nation international tour. The trip included visits to Ghana, Argentina, Brazil, Namibia, and Trinidad and Tobago, with a focus on strengthening India’s partnerships across different regions.
During his stay in Port of Spain, Prime Minister Modi held extensive talks with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on trade, climate resilience, defence cooperation, healthcare, agriculture, disaster management, and technology partnerships.
The visit also included a special address to the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago and several cultural and diplomatic events aimed at reinforcing historical and community ties between the two nations.
Highest National Honour Conferred on PM Modi
A major moment during Prime Minister Modi’s visit was the conferring of “The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago,” the country’s highest civilian honour. The award ceremony was held at the President’s House in Port of Spain.
Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar for the recognition, calling it an honour for the people of India as well.
During the visit, both leaders also participated in a tree plantation programme under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign by planting a neem tree at the Red House, the seat of Parliament in Trinidad and Tobago.
