Defense – Trump Signals Possible Shift on Turkey’s F-35 Fighter Jet Request
Defense – NATO cooperation and Turkey-US defense relations continue to draw global attention.- US President Donald Trump has indicated that his administration may move closer to approving Turkey’s long-standing request to acquire F-35 fighter jets, while also praising Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his role during the recent regional tensions involving Iran. The remarks came during a joint appearance with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House on Wednesday, where Trump described Erdogan as a trusted partner and highlighted Turkey’s strategic importance within the military alliance.

Trump Commends Erdogan’s Position During Iran Crisis
Speaking to reporters, Trump said Erdogan chose not to become involved in the recent conflict linked to Iran despite facing significant regional pressures. According to the US President, he personally urged the Turkish leader to remain outside the confrontation, and Erdogan respected that request. Trump also noted that he had made similar appeals to other international leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, thanking them for avoiding further escalation during the crisis.
The President described Erdogan as a leader committed to his country and said their personal relationship had remained strong over the years. Trump added that the Turkish President had earned international respect and had often been cooperative in discussions involving regional security issues.
F-35 Review Remains Underway
When questioned about whether his upcoming visit to Turkey could include positive decisions on Ankara’s requests for F-35 fighter aircraft and F-110 jet engines, Trump suggested that progress was possible. He said Turkey is an important NATO ally and hinted that his administration could make decisions that would be welcomed by the Turkish government.
Vice President J.D. Vance later explained that officials are currently examining whether Turkey has satisfied all legal conditions required under US law before any approval regarding the F-35 programme can be granted. He stressed that Congress also has an important role in the process and said a formal announcement would be made after the review is completed.
Turkey’s NATO Role Highlighted
Trump defended Turkey’s place within NATO, describing the country as a dependable and capable member of the alliance. He noted that Turkey already operates a significant amount of American-made military equipment and possesses one of the strongest armed forces among NATO nations.
The President also remarked that US officials frequently seek his assistance when communication with Erdogan becomes difficult, suggesting that his personal relationship with the Turkish leader has often helped facilitate diplomatic discussions.
NATO Summit Visit Linked to Erdogan
Trump confirmed that he intends to attend the upcoming NATO summit scheduled in Ankara next month. He acknowledged that Erdogan’s role as host influenced his decision, saying he likely would not have travelled if the event had been held elsewhere.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also emphasized Turkey’s value to the alliance. He pointed to the country’s extensive defence industry, noting that thousands of Turkish companies contribute to defence production across NATO member states, including projects in the United States.
Strategic Importance of Turkey
The NATO summit, planned for July 7 and 8 in Ankara, is expected to focus on increasing defence spending commitments, strengthening military manufacturing capacity and coordinating continued assistance for Ukraine. The meeting is also expected to address broader security challenges facing the alliance.
Turkey remains one of NATO’s most significant members, maintaining the alliance’s second-largest military after the United States. Its geographic position connecting Europe, the Middle East and the Black Sea region continues to make the country a critical partner in regional and international security planning.
