Court Accepts Defence Arguments for Delay

This latest development comes shortly after the Jerusalem District Court had already decided to cancel Netanyahu’s scheduled appearances for the week. The court’s earlier ruling was based on submissions from the defence, which highlighted both security and diplomatic factors as reasons for the delay.

Despite objections from the State Attorney’s Office, which insisted that the trial should proceed without further interruption, the court sided with the defence. Prosecutors argued that Netanyahu should adjust his commitments to allow cross-examination to move forward, citing the importance of maintaining public trust in the judicial process.

Alternative Testimony Presented in Court

Instead of hearing from Netanyahu, the court chose to continue proceedings by allowing another defence witness to testify. This decision ensured that the trial could progress in some form, even in the absence of the prime minister.

A panel of judges, including Rivka Friedman-Feldman, Moshe Bar-Am, and Oded Shaham, approved this adjustment. The court heard testimony from Ilanit Filber, who is connected to a key figure in the case. Her appearance replaced Netanyahu’s scheduled testimony, which had originally been expected to continue this week.

The trial is currently centred on what is widely considered the most serious of the allegations against Netanyahu, commonly referred to as Case 4000. This case involves claims that regulatory decisions were influenced in favour of a major telecommunications company in exchange for positive media coverage.

According to prosecutors, Netanyahu is accused of providing benefits that helped the company financially while allegedly receiving favourable treatment from a news platform linked to its ownership. Netanyahu has consistently denied all accusations, maintaining that his actions were lawful and appropriate.

The case has also drawn attention due to concerns surrounding the credibility of a central witness, Shlomo Filber. His earlier statements reportedly showed inconsistencies during court proceedings in 2022. At one point, prosecutors even considered revoking his status as a state witness due to these discrepancies.
