According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation focused on weakening Iran’s ability to threaten international shipping routes, particularly commercial vessels moving through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Operation Focused on Strategic Military Infrastructure
CENTCOM stated that the strikes targeted multiple military sites across Iran, including air defence systems, coastal surveillance radars, missile launch positions, drone facilities, and tactical naval vessels. The objective, officials said, was to reduce Iran’s operational capabilities that could be used to disrupt maritime traffic in one of the world’s busiest energy corridors.
The military operation also reflected an expansion in battlefield tactics. Alongside fighter aircraft and naval warships, US forces reportedly deployed one-way attack aerial drones and one-way attack sea drones during the mission, representing the first time both systems were used together in an operation of this nature.
Strait of Hormuz Remains Central to US Strategy
In its official statement, CENTCOM emphasized that maintaining free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz remains a key priority. The command described the waterway as a vital international trade route used by commercial shipping from across the world and stressed that no single country has authority over its passage.
US officials said the latest strikes were intended to safeguard civilian mariners and ensure uninterrupted movement of merchant vessels amid rising security concerns in the region.
Washington Cites Continued Threats to Commercial Shipping
The latest military action comes after months of heightened tensions between the United States and Iran. Washington has repeatedly accused Tehran of threatening civilian shipping and engaging in activities that endanger international maritime commerce.
In a statement shared through its official social media account, CENTCOM said the strikes began at approximately 5 p.m. Eastern Time following authorization from the Commander in Chief. The command stated that the mission was designed to continue degrading Iran’s ability to launch attacks against civilian mariners and commercial vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz while holding Iranian military forces accountable.
CENTCOM also noted that American forces remain fully prepared to conduct both defensive and offensive operations whenever necessary to preserve freedom of navigation across the region.
Reports of Explosions in Southern Iran
Meanwhile, Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency reported that at least two powerful explosions were heard near Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan province shortly after the US operation began. The reports did not immediately provide details regarding casualties or the exact locations affected.
Bandar Abbas is considered one of Iran’s most strategically significant port cities due to its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran Announces Retaliatory Military Action
As tensions continued to rise, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had launched retaliatory attacks targeting facilities at the Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain. According to statements cited by international media, the strikes reportedly targeted helicopter maintenance facilities, an aircraft hangar housing a P-8 surveillance aircraft, and a US military drone command-and-control center.
The IRGC said the attacks were carried out in response to ongoing US military operations and indicated that further retaliatory measures were continuing. Reports also suggested that Iranian military forces launched a broader wave of missile and drone attacks aimed at what Tehran described as enemy military bases across the region.
Bahrain Issues Public Safety Advisory
Following reports of incoming threats, Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior activated emergency sirens across affected areas. Authorities urged both citizens and residents to remain calm, move to the nearest safe location, and rely on official government channels for verified information and further instructions.
