India Welcomes Indonesian Delegation

India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed Sugiono’s arrival through an official message shared on social media. The ministry extended greetings to the Indonesian Foreign Minister and highlighted the significance of his participation in the multilateral meeting taking place in the national capital.

The conference will be chaired by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who is expected to lead discussions focused on global challenges, economic cooperation, and institutional reforms. Officials from several BRICS countries and invited partner nations are also expected to attend the gathering over the two-day schedule.

Focus on International Cooperation

According to diplomatic sources, the meeting will provide an opportunity for foreign ministers to exchange views on pressing regional and international developments. Discussions are likely to include geopolitical tensions, trade partnerships, sustainable growth, and emerging global security concerns.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that participating delegations are also expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their stay in New Delhi. India has consistently emphasized stronger coordination among developing economies, and the upcoming sessions are expected to reinforce that approach.

Theme Highlights Long-Term Development Goals

The second day of the event will include a dedicated session under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The agenda is designed to encourage collaboration among BRICS nations on long-term development priorities and economic stability.

Another important discussion will focus on reforming global governance institutions and strengthening the multilateral system. Member nations are expected to exchange views on making international bodies more representative and responsive to the interests of emerging economies.

India’s Growing Role in BRICS

India is set to hold the BRICS chairmanship in 2026. Officials say the country’s leadership agenda will continue to follow the vision introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in 2025.

The proposed framework places emphasis on a people-focused and development-oriented approach, with attention on innovation, resilience, sustainability, and stronger cooperation among member states. Indian officials believe the grouping can play a larger role in shaping economic and diplomatic discussions at the global level.

Background of the BRICS Alliance

The BRICS grouping began as BRIC after the foreign ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, and China held their first meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in 2006. The bloc later held its inaugural summit in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in 2009.

In 2010, South Africa joined the coalition following discussions among member nations, leading to the formation of BRICS. Since then, the platform has evolved into a major forum representing emerging economies and promoting cooperation across political, economic, and strategic sectors.

The most recent meeting of BRICS foreign ministers was held during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025, where India participated as the incoming chair for BRICS 2026.
