Odyssey – Zendaya Discusses Athena’s Emotional Role in Nolan’s Epic
Odyssey – Zendaya has shared new details about playing Athena in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, describing the character as an emotionally complex presence in Odysseus’ journey. The actor said she approached the Greek goddess by looking beyond her divine identity and concentrating on Athena’s connection with Odysseus and the conflict he carries within himself.

Athena’s Role in Odysseus’ Inner Conflict
Speaking about her interpretation of the role, Zendaya said the emotional side of Athena was central to her understanding of the character. In her view, the goddess is not simply an outside force directing Odysseus, but also reflects the moral questions and personal turmoil that shape his return home.
Zendaya explained that Athena’s influence can be seen as a form of firm guidance. The character pushes Odysseus forward while confronting him with the consequences of his choices. She noted that the journey is tied not only to physical danger but also to the pain caused by the decisions he has made during and after the war.
According to Zendaya, Odysseus’ attempt to return to his family becomes part of a wider struggle to face his past. Athena’s presence, she suggested, gives the story an added emotional dimension as he works through guilt, loss and the responsibility he carries.
First Shoot Took Place on Troy Set in Morocco
Zendaya’s first days on the production were spent filming the sack of Troy on a large-scale set built in Morocco. She recalled feeling nervous before entering the demanding environment created for the sequence.
The actor described the experience as intense, particularly because of the scale of the production design. She said the detailed sets, costumes and props helped create a strong sense of place, making it easier to imagine the ancient city during the dramatic scene.
Zendaya said the production’s immersive setting made her feel as though she had stepped directly into Troy. The extensive work on the visual world, she added, meant that the atmosphere of the location itself supported the performance.
Challenging Weather Did Not Dull the Excitement
Despite cold and rainy conditions during filming, Zendaya said the energy on set kept her focused. She recalled that crew members repeatedly asked whether she needed a jacket, but she was so caught up in the moment that she barely noticed the weather.
The actor described the shoot as exhilarating and dreamlike. For her, the scale of the set and the intensity of the sequence created an experience that stood out from the usual rhythm of a film production.
Nolan Brings Homer’s Epic to the Screen
The Odyssey is written and directed by Christopher Nolan and is based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem. The film follows Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War.
Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, whose difficult voyage includes encounters with mythical beings and dangerous obstacles. At the heart of the story is his effort to reunite with his wife, Penelope, after years away from home.
With Zendaya portraying Athena, the film is expected to place renewed focus on the relationship between divine intervention and human consequence in Homer’s classic tale. The Odyssey is scheduled to premiere in theatres worldwide on July 17.
