Film Finds Audience Beyond Theatres

Johar posted the film’s poster on Instagram, highlighting the accomplishment and thanking those who contributed to the project. The drama, featuring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri in lead roles, has drawn attention in academic circles months after its theatrical run. According to Johar, the opportunity to showcase the film within some of the world’s most respected universities marks a proud chapter for his team.

He noted that the response the film has received in recent months has been encouraging, particularly in spaces known for intellectual engagement and critical discussion. For Johar and his colleagues at Dharma Productions, the screenings signal recognition that extends beyond commercial performance.

Director Shazia Iqbal Credited for Vision

In his remarks, Johar placed special emphasis on director Shazia Iqbal, applauding her for shaping the narrative with clarity and conviction. He described her as the driving force behind the film and credited her perspective as central to its impact.

Johar acknowledged that the film’s resonance in academic environments reflects Iqbal’s storytelling strength. By addressing layered social realities through personal narratives, the director offered what he called an essential voice in contemporary cinema. He added that the appreciation shown toward the project belongs largely to her creative leadership.

Story Rooted in Social Conflict

Dhadak 2 serves as a spiritual successor to the 2018 film Dhadak and is adapted from the critically acclaimed Tamil feature Pariyerum Perumal. The story follows two young individuals, Nilesh and Vidhi, whose relationship is challenged by entrenched caste divisions. As their bond deepens, social prejudice and family opposition create mounting tensions, shaping the film’s emotional arc.

The narrative explores themes of inequality, identity, and the cost of defying societal boundaries. By focusing on personal relationships within a broader social framework, the film attempts to present a grounded portrayal of discrimination and resistance.

Box Office Struggles Contrast Academic Reception

Despite its thematic ambition and critical conversations, Dhadak 2 did not achieve strong commercial results during its theatrical release. Industry estimates indicate that the film fell short of recovering its production costs at the box office.

However, its later screenings at leading universities suggest that its influence may extend beyond ticket sales. Films addressing social issues often find renewed engagement in academic settings, where discussions can examine their cultural and political context. The Ivy League screenings have therefore provided the project with a different kind of platform.

Johar’s Ongoing Projects

While reflecting on Dhadak 2’s journey, Johar continues work on his latest production, Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, directed by Sameer Vidwans. The upcoming romantic comedy features Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday in lead roles, with veteran actors Neena Gupta, Jackie Shroff, and Tiku Talsania also part of the ensemble.

Over the years, Johar has established himself as one of Hindi cinema’s prominent producers and directors. His contributions to the industry have been acknowledged through honors such as the National Film Awards and the Padma Shri.

The recent recognition of Dhadak 2 in academic institutions adds a new dimension to the film’s trajectory. Although its theatrical performance may not have matched expectations, its presence in university auditoriums underscores how cinema can find relevance in varied spaces. For Johar and his team, the screenings represent not only institutional acknowledgment but also continued dialogue around the film’s central themes.
