DigitalTransformation – MSMEs Across India Embrace Technology to Boost Growth

DigitalTransformation –  India’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are increasingly integrating digital technologies into their day-to-day operations, with a growing number of businesses relying on electronic payment systems and artificial intelligence tools to improve efficiency and customer service. According to the MSME Digital Index Report 2026 released by PayNearby, digital adoption is gaining significant momentum, particularly among businesses operating in semi-urban and rural regions.

Msmes across india embrace digital growth

Rising Confidence in Digital Platforms

The survey highlights a notable increase in confidence among small business owners when using technology. Nearly 87 percent of respondents stated that they feel more comfortable working with digital tools compared to the previous year. Additionally, 82 percent reported that they are now confident using these platforms for routine business activities.

This growing trust in technology is also reflected in payment habits. Around 80 percent of retailers surveyed said digital transactions at their outlets have increased over the last 12 months, indicating a steady shift toward cashless and technology-enabled commerce.

UPI and Aadhaar Banking Gain Strong Ground

Digital payment methods are becoming a central part of business operations across the country. The report found that Aadhaar-enabled banking services and Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions together account for 61 percent of the dominant transaction mix among MSME retailers in semi-urban and rural markets.

Despite this rapid digital expansion, cash continues to play an important role in the transaction ecosystem. The study noted that cash remains the single largest individual mode of customer payment, contributing 37 percent of transactions. However, the combined share of Aadhaar banking and UPI demonstrates how quickly digital payment systems are being adopted by local businesses.

Artificial Intelligence Begins Making an Impact

Interest in artificial intelligence is also expanding among small enterprises. The report revealed that awareness of AI has reached a high level, with 90 percent of surveyed business owners indicating that they have heard about the technology in some form.

More importantly, 71 percent said they have already experimented with or used AI-powered tools to automate tasks and streamline business processes. These tools are being explored for improving operational efficiency, managing customer interactions, and supporting routine administrative functions.

However, the journey toward full AI adoption remains in its early stages. Approximately 26 percent of respondents said they are uncertain about which AI features would be most useful for their specific business requirements. This suggests that while awareness is widespread, many entrepreneurs still require guidance and training to unlock the technology’s full potential.

Digital Services Contribute to Business Growth

The report also points to tangible business benefits linked to digital adoption. About 41 percent of retailers said digital tools have contributed to higher income levels, while 37 percent reported an increase in customer footfall after introducing technology-based services.

Among the various services offered by retailers, cash withdrawal emerged as the most commonly used service, accounting for 51 percent of activity. Aadhaar-enabled banking followed with 22 percent, while UPI-related services represented 12 percent.

Survey Captures Evolving MSME Landscape

The MSME Digital Index 2026 evaluates key aspects of technology adoption, including digital payments, customer engagement, business performance, AI readiness, training requirements, trust factors, and future service expectations. The study surveyed 10,000 retailers and MSMEs across PayNearby’s network, covering kirana stores, customer service centers, mobile recharge shops, digital service providers, and other neighborhood enterprises.

The findings indicate that India’s MSME sector is gradually moving beyond initial digital experimentation and entering a phase of more consistent and confident technology usage, creating new opportunities for growth and financial inclusion.
